It is Die Deterioration, not hub doubling.

Yes I agree and would only add that the letter D took a hit that makes it look a bit like a split serif.

Note how the die state is showing the movement of the devices to the rim of the die area? Die wear issue. (Just checked, the design on this years nickels were close to the rim, but with die wear, the design moved towards the rim area faster. The design was very close to start with)
