Are dealers that careless? Do they just not care? Can they not see the issue?
They must never have had to tell someone they have been scammed......

Well, who would actually enter an auction and bid on that?

Well, there is $35 worth of silver there. As a novelty it is worth that much, but not more.

Of the three replies....not one mentions that these altered coins are illegal and like versions have scammed MANY people. Just an observation. I mean no disrespect to any of the individuals and as always I appreciate the responses. But...
A) they are illegal to sell.....
B) We as a chat group have dealt with many (here on CCF) who believe they have acquired (bought, found inherited etc) very valuable off metal coins only to find out they are plated fake
C) Dealers are supposed to be trusted.....this is not the first time CA has drawn fire from me about fake coins. The RCMP actually called them (Sgt. F) to remind them about fake coins..am I wrong in feeling dealers should know and follow the rules. They should be the front line of defense against crap like this?

MM to be honest I think you seem a bit harsh here. We show plated coins on the site here all the time. We never call for them to be destroyed as forgeries. We just denounce them as plated coins.

I don't think anyone is trying to deceive anyone here. This is just like the counterstamped dollars of a couple of years back. Just "granny bait".

I see those as trinkets, no longer coins, and not much different than coins encased in Lucite or electronically shrunk coins.

I can't remember which auction house it was, but a set of 1967 gold-plated coins like that was packaged in pliofilm (not by the RCM) sold for a hefty premium, which was mind boggling.

When I come across them, I either melt them (if silver) or destroy them. I even destroyed the plated penny that my daughter brought home from her grade 11 chemistry class.

Everyone should be following the "rules"
Front line defense needs to be yours and my "knowledge". Buyer beware.

If you're talking about defacing legal tender I don't believe the RCMP or any other police agency has ever gone after someone for applying plating to a coin. There is nothing fraudulent here on the surface. The auction listing says the coins are gold plated, which one can assume is true based on the photos. Anyone who is an actual collector will know immediately that these coins were not plated at the RCM. As for anyone else, who would that be?

Plated coins have duped many collectors in the past. ALTERED coins are illegal in Canada. Even though CA states they are plated that does not remove the liability of them. The attempt to resell them as off metal errors is very common. Neophyte collectors are generally most fooled by them and may/have caused them to spend recreational funds on other safer items leaving numismatics. The hobby can not afford that. The dealer here paid less than melt for sure and is trying to make a profit on it. I find this typical and lacks any common sense! I find the responses interesting and I thank all for them.

I just sent an email via CA website asking......I know you (CA) know that selling these are illegal so why are you trying?
I will post the response if I get one.

I'm with Mikey on this. Why is a reputable dealer like CA trying to sell something to convince neophytes that they are the real thing and probably from the mint? I guess money talks by putting something in an auction. At least trying to sell it at the store, the server could tell the buyer that it was after market and worth scrap value.

OK, guys I'm not trying to side with the Dealer here. Just pointing out that there are 'technical' illegalities that don't see enforcement, this is one of them. As far as the newbies being ripped off is concerned, I'm sure that happens every minute of every day on platforms like the Bay. I think it far less likely to occur during a live on-line auction where most of the participants are knowledgeable with fairly deep pockets. I do think that having an item like this doesn't serve the Dealer well because it is cheap, dime store crap that no collector would touch. Maybe it's there as a novelty item.

wallyb it is the reseller. The Chinese manufacturers of the counterfeits sell them for a dollar....the resellers are the scammers however both are wrong.

I'm not sure that is true. I don't think plating of coins is illegal either.
