Hello,

I went to a local coin shop in Rome today. The man that owns the shop told me he is buying all American coins he can and selling to me at a low margin. A few days ago, I posted my silver buy in Florence which I know is atypical. However, I am paying closer to retail at the local coin shop in Rome. But, I don't really know (American) 'LCS' retail prices.

I bought the following -
1964 post mint set - €15
2018 ASE - €28
'44 WL - €9
'60-63 Franklin halves - €9 X 5 - €45
40s- Mercury dimes - €2 X 3 - €6
'36 Quarter - €4
1884 O Morgan - €22
1881 Morgan - €22
1889 O Morgan - €22
1921 Morgan - €20

When I get home later I can post a picture, but I paid €193 or approx. $211

I feel I'm on track.... but not 100% since I've never bought silver in the U.S. at an LCS.

@dearborn, this particularly shop owner buys for me and flips at low margins. My Italian is functional enough for me to understand that. He's 81.

I buy him about about once a week at these prices.

There aren't many explicit u.s. coin collectors in Rome. All coin collectors want a Morgan and maybe an example of each of the three halves, but Italian stackers focus on 500 lire (basically their '64 Kennedy half) and some other low premium European coins; also small bars are common here.

I'm happy to keep buying from him at these prices, just looking for comps on u.s. LCS silver prices.

Roma, once again you have done quite well. These coins are selling on ebay for above what you paid.

@hondo, thanks for your response and affirmation!

I keep a skeptical eye on ebay . . .with tax, shipping, etc. I feel the price for near bullion grade coins is high + retail. How about in an LCS? Am I at about cash retail on these?

At the current 1.08 conversion rate that's a bit below the prices at coin dealers near me. The ASE are selling for around $40 for the common/high mintage dates locally. We also have junk bins, which I would think they do overseas as well, where by the coins are a slight premium over current spot. But ultimately what drives the pricing is popularity and not the silver content regardless of where you are. You did very well indeed.
