I'm interested in knowing the cause or condition that creates the raised edges along the northern and eastern borders of the "4" in 1964. It appears to be the reverse of a MD. The MD shelf is elevated and on the interior edges of the 4 rather than on the exterior edge of the 4.

Anyone know why this condition exists? Is there such a thing as a reverse Machine Doubling?

Thanks for looking, and your feedback.

Your inking makes it difficult to evaluate the 4.

Die wear.

When the die slams into the planchet the force of the contact is transferred laterally across the face of the die.

This causes rimward distortion in the metal of the die and results in all sorts of changes to the shape of the devices, but the changes are always flowing from the center towards the rim.

Notice that the only thing affected on the date is the rim side of the 4? Also, notice that the MM looks like its sliding towards the rim?

Finally, I see the beginnings of radial flow lines around the MM and under the bust, which is another indication that the die is aging.

The surface is showing roller lines on the devices. This is just lines on the surface of the coin. On a Woody regardless of wear, the woody is present as it is in the planchet. Roller lines are just on the surface and wear off the tops of the highest devices first.
