I wouldn't say it is common, but it is just an over polished die issue.

On a die the design is just opposite that of a coin. The fields are the outside edge of the die and the devices are deeper into the die. So when a die is polished, the fields are affected first. The thinning starts showing on the fields by altering the sub devices. (Initials and the neck area. When this is deep, then it remove more and more of the sub devices. Thus the face is not affected, but the neck and initials on the designs are affected. This done to rescue the die to keep using it. When it gets deeper, then the more of the devices will be affected:

While they look interesting, they are just from over polished dies.

Yes, aggressive die polishing. Good example.

Don't recall seeing a 1950 S die abraded this much. Almost reminds me of Copper Fever's 1974 D example partially seen above. Here's the whole obverse. Thanks, Doug.

Unfortunately it seems this "floating head" is a newer style of " ebay fad" coin that is popping up. Newbies see youtube videos and ebay auctions and start looking for these "rare errors" that are just die polishing events.

Yeah, for a long time the "3-legger" and the "22-P" have been valued and are the same linf of thing...except they were a single year (OK... there is a 1936 as well) .

The "floating roof" and "floating head" can be on any date b/c it is just a die polishing event.

It's just that nowadays b/c of the internet, it is so much easier for people to "get a following{ for a non-error by posting it online and selling for big bucks on ebay to those who don't know any better. So others naturally follow and start looking for the non-error.

And...surprise, surprise (NOT) they find one!

I saw this on many years. Is fanny looking coin.

I agree with EARL on his narrative about

The last on ebay was announced as " Extremely Rare Error Coin". ebay let them to put because they are business minded and driven company. Who paid 350$ for that coin very soon will find out that is not error and will not be certify as error or recognize.
