I agree. As a collector it would be sad, but at the same time, the Mint historically made money off of cents. Not only are they losing money now but the commerce need for cents and nickels seems very diminished.

It may be time to move on!

One nice thing about pennies is that they are like dead birds. As a political weather vane they are like a very dead canary in a coal mine; you know there's a serious problem with politics when even common sense is ignored by the entire establishment. It's easy to see corruption in government every time you get a filthy corroded slug in change. Leaders never have to even touch this garbage since they deal only in stacks of hundred dollar bills. Then, too, we wear them like an albatross around our collective necks to remind us how the economy once functioned; competition to build a better mouse trap. Now we deal with businesses in a race to the bottom and to the lowest common denominator; pennies. God awful pennies that are not only ugly and worthless but toxic as well.

It might be worth billions of dollars a year to remind people exactly what's wrong with the country; bureaus that pass laws but can't stop wasting money without an act of Congress.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

I certainly wouldn't miss the hateful little piece of junk the mint has been churning out for 40 years now.

It would be far less expensive to simply cheapen the nickel by making it smaller and aluminum than to revamp the entire coinage system. As is dimes and quarters are not compatible without a five cent coin. We could scrap out every coin except the quarter but that would involve wasting 65,000,000,000 dimes that are worth about 3c each. Reminting nickel would actually produce a profit for the mint since the recovered metal would be worth more than the cost of manufacturing the new coin.

With lower production the mint could slow down the presses and make higher relief coins that make us all proud.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Interesting perspective. We all know this but, Hubby found a visual about this topic.

As for elimination or changing of our coins...the World is rapidly going to Digital Currency. I don't know if the US, general public would embrace the DC but, it certainly seems that we may not have a choice in the not so distant future. Please don't get all political to my comment. It's just a thought to ponder as to what would happen to our fascinating hobby. Maybe nothing in my lifetime - I hope!

Maybe it is time for the U.S. to leave behind the decimal system and embrace the Metric system..
change the values of coinage - drop the cent and nickel - keep the 10 cent piece, change the quarter to a 20 cent, bring back the 50 cent and of course the dollar.

Pennie, nickels, and dimes need to END now. It's plain dumb to make them and spend thousands of dollars moving them around.

Big government sucks, it has grown far too big, it's out of control.

DB...I think that the Metric system has been mentioned many times and has not been accepted in the US. I like where you're going with your idea though.

Canada did it right by eliminating small bills and the one-cent piece. Don't give folks a choice and they will adapt.

that's a rather mathematically challenged article, for example, one can't make 15 cents change without nickels or cents, so the proposal is DOA, instead the discussion should be about whether the average American can cope with rounding

The conversation above can be added to the many, many similar conversations we've enjoyed the past few years here.

Government too big? Perhaps. As collectors, think how fun it would be collecting 'coinage' (broadly defined...) minted/adopted by individual county governments, and/or municipalities, and/or tribes, or...

I think we, as collectors, would go broke faster if that happened - Not to imagine how difficult it would be to keep up with 50 states coinage if each state had its own style.

If not metric, then the Dewey Decimal system! Yes, a weak attempt at humor...going back to creating road rash.
