5/6 Update - I've bought these coins (there were four of them that I bought) for $45 each so it was worth the risk in case this coin was artificially toned. Even if it's MS 61 or even down to an AU grade, it was worth the gamble I bought these two coins the other day and I'm curious to see what everyone's opinion is on this. I am pretty confident that these two coins have been artificially toned. What is everyone's thoughts? (I know PCI and their issues but for the price I paid for these, it was too good to pass up due to what they could be worth). I have posted the back side of the coin as well. *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark to Title. It's very important to have in the title. *** ——> I'm just looking to see people's opinion on the toning. I'm not look for people to say it's an AU grade (which they are trolls for saying that), I'm just wanting to see the thoughts on the toning. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** Edited by Sannys25 05/06/2023 12:00 pm

The coin looks naturally toned. Some of the older holders with the rubber type inserts can and do produce rim toning as shown on your coin. The grade on the coin is generous at MS64.

There is actually a term for such toned coins in PCI holders. It is "PCI toned".

This is the infamous PCI coins with toning.
These are artificial.

I'd be less concerned about the toning vs the assigned grade. In my opinion a little too much chatter to warrant MS64. I call it MS63

Better pics if you want grade opinion.

I'd pass on this. Bad pedigree.

I'm not a fan of toning on high grade coins at all, this would be a big pass for me..

Would need to see the reverse. As far as toning goes, I'm leaning toward 'natural', not deliberate, human-assisted toning.

I think MS-62, - too much chatter to be graded higher.
I would agree that this coin is naturally toned. Toning most probably acquired by being wrapped in bleached white paper. Such a theory opens the debate as to if it is artificially toned or not.
My personal problem is that if in MS grades with good luster, I prefer my silver coins to be blast white. That is the condition closest to what they were in, when they originally left the coining press.
If, in hindsight, you bought them at a price that you are happy with, that is OK.

I for one like toning but I generally won't pay extra for it. The coin in the picture has nice toning. I like it. Looks original to me.

I don't ever recall seeing PCI holders that looked like that. This must have been towards the end of the company.
Can you show us the back of the coin and slab? Thanks!

Based on the updated pics: In my opinion the toning is "ok" but the grading is way off by 2 to 3 points. No way it is a 64. That style of slab appears to be the last generation they have used. It, along with their loose grading standards, probably helped lead them to the black hole of grading where they got sucked in to oblivion.

No such thing as artificial v natural toning . Correct usage .. Market acceptable toning .as deemed by the Lord Gods at the Grading services ( PCGS / NGC) .
Buy the coin not the holder . This PCI piece , likely 60/62 in my opinion.
