Relative newbie posting again. Just purchased this coin. Yes, I know it's been cleaned (hate that) but the repunched date is pretty odd to me - can't find this variety anywhere. Also the doubling above the shield looks like it has some depth - not flat shelf Machine Doubling. The wreaths display Machine Doubling, I believe. These are the best pictures I have now. Curious as to your thoughts.

Going to need a better close up of the date region. I see something going on with the 8 in the date, but what?
Can you take the coin out of the 2x2 and photograph it again?
The shield just looks wrong for some reason.

I just bought this coin and do not yet have it in hand. Once I do I'll try to post better pictures showing more detail. I just went through the 30 varieties listed here: http://www.indiancentvarieties.com/...rieties.html
and it's not in that group. Nothing showing the two apparent die chips(?) around the date. All four digits repunched. Frankly I bought the coin because I was so curious to examine it.

Slightly better detail on the RPD. What is going on with the "8" ? More images in about a week.

Yeah, I asked about that 8 - It can't be a re-punch - I can't think why it would be anything other than an 8 in that position. maybe a circulation hit a long time ago?

Well, gents, looks like I'm again the victim of inaccurate pictures. The coin arrived today. No sign of any RPD that I can discern. The reverse still interests me, however. Appears to show what I guess is Machine Doubling on both sides of the wreaths, but the doubling above the shield has depth to it - not all the same color like I'd think Machine Doubling would have. Die appears to be worn as it appears that "ONE" has been reworked a bit to the north. Really wish this weren't cleaned, but what can you do. Didn't take it out of the 2x2 since I may send it back. I'm into it for $52, but can return without issue. Very disappointed about the date, but what do you guys think about the reverse?

Well I read something today (a few minutes ago) about 'Longacre's Doubling' Which what you might have on your coin.

I posted this above, I'm not sure you saw it as you never commented on it, but here it is again. Longacre's doubling is what you see on the shield.

Yes, thanks, I did read about that. I've not seen another IHC with this much doubling above the shield, though. I'm guessing Machine Doubling on the wreaths, but when I've seen that it's only on one side of the device, not both. Wouldn't make any difference to me if the coin was not cleaned, but for slightly over $50 I'm afraid I'll have to send it back. Disappointment.

The more I read about Longacre doubling, the more I'm not at all sure that's what the shield doubling is. Longacre doubling is usually (but not always) on legends and not design elements. Read this for more info: http://numissociety.com/content.php...A-discussion

Note the Longacre doubling on the CN IHC pictured and compare it to the shield doubling on the 1890 IHC. Longacre doubling usually surrounds the letters, as on the 1860. On the 1890, it's only above the shield and isn't as sharply defined. Comments and input welcome. Trying to decide whether to send this coin back.

This from Strike Doubling Flyer by J. T. Stanton. Note that Longacre doubling surrounds the letters.

I agree that it's not Longacre doubling. I'm thinking Die Deterioration Doubling.

Torn about keeping the coin. If it weren't cleaned it'd be a no brainer. The reverse interests me with the deep strike/ odd Machine Doubling on the wreaths. Also something going on at the bottom of the shield. It's like there's material pushed up from the field under it. Never seen that before.

Kind of wondering if it's Longacre doubling on the wreaths instead of Machine Doubling. From what I've been reading, I would expect Machine Doubling to go to one side or the other on the wreaths, not both. Not trying to belabor this subject (I know, already too late for that!) but I just can't decide whether to keep it or not.
