Hello all. Hope everyone is having a great weekend. I got some customer wrapped penny rolls and they are spitting out a lot of nice coins. One of them is this 2008 D Lincoln Memorial penny. It looks like a strike through but kind of looks like a stain too. I haven't seen a strike through in my hand before so my experience with them is only what I have read and looked at online or in books. Any tips on the matter are greatly appreciated.

I think you are confusing strike through with die clash and with that photo I cannot tell what is going on. Might be staining or maybe glue John1

It appears to be staining and not a die clash. Struck thru errors are when a foreign object is present at the time of striking.

For fun, consider giving the coin a long soak in 100% acetone. If glue is involved, it may be reduced or completely removed.

Definitely a good place to start.

Put one coin on top of another, add some coffee, soda or any type of liquid, wait for few days . You will probably duplicate this effect.

It does appear to be a stain of some sort, so a good acetone soak would be a great start.

Start with an acetone soak. Whether glue of stain, it will go away.

no one else seeing the monster die clash?
the memorial is almost fully visible across Lincoln's face,
unless that's a stain left from another cent sitting on top (creating a memorial shaped mark)

Yeah, I see what you're talking about, but can't tell in the picture if it's a stain, glue, or clash.

Since it doesn't appear to be raised above the surface of the coin, that imprint of the Lincoln Memorial across Abe's face is most likely surface staining. I'm with @odd that this coin was in water with another cent resting on top--perhaps a water fountain.

When troubleshooting a coin, one needs to have a starting non intrusive first step in order to figure out what is going on, that first step should be a nice acetone bath to see what comes off. What is left can be discussed afterwards.

Besides, a clash will almost always show up on the fields of the coin. That is the high point on a die. Lincolns face and bust is recessed in the die and is fairly well protected from a clash, If a clash does appear on the raised devices on a coin, then it would stand to reason that the clash would be very strong on the fields also.

Thank you everyone. I was confusing die clash and strike through. I will give it a nice acetone bath today and get back to you. It is not raised just fyi which was one of the weird things that led me to believe it could be a stain. But I will give it a try just in case. Update soon.
