Wow - appears to have quite a bit of chatter on the portrait. Agree that if I submitted it raw it would likely not come back as MS69.

Of course, I have seen coins in MS-69 before, but they were all memorable and I suspect that they were treated more carefully at the mint, but this halfdollar. It's amazing how he was able to get such a high rating.

Registry sets were an ingenious marketing strategy. They drive up the price of high graded slabs and make it so more people are willing to pay the price to gamble they will also get as good of a grade on their own coins.
Yet break out that MS69 and resubmit it to NGC and it would not be guaranteed the same MS69 again. Without science, it is all a fantasy world...but it can be a fun one...which is why some people enjoy slabs.
Recently heard of a new coin app. called Lucky Coin. The user who introduced me to it said it consistently grades his coins. The maker of the app who I contacted said,
"We have a machine learning algorithm that is based off of available graded coins online, and we compare your coin against the quality of the other graded coins to see where it fits in best."
Since the system is based off of comparison/learning from human graded slabs, this means the "average" of each grade point should get better over time and become even more and more verifiable and consistent.
I am hoping this is finally the end of, what I feel is, profiteering off of the hobby.
See the essay in my signature for linked data from the PCGS website showing why I feel it is WAY past time to legitimize the coin hobby grading system.

Well I just looked up the cert on the NGC label - and NGC puts the value at $12,500.00! https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/6613565-001/69/only 3 in this grade by NGC I assume, and none in higher grades. So now where are all my Bicentennial silver uncirculated halves hiding at?

The raw example in my Dansco has better eye appeal. They are just chasing the numbers here.

I don't see anything wrong with the pursuit of leadership. Everyone everywhere wants to be the first. Another question is whether this championship is worth 12 thousand dollars.

Are you saying that certain people receive a higher grade if the coin isn't worthy of it? Perish the thought.

I just bought two bicentennial silver mint sets and they arrived a couple of days ago. I haven't had time to look at them closely, but going to do so this weekend. Maybe I can retire!
