Under the coin microscope this appears to be a 1945 Lincoln Cent. I was told that this was damage after the coin was made and put into circulation, but humor me here for a second. Could this coin have been struck with a Mercury dime die? I ask because looking closely I saw something and overlaid an image of a Mercury dime over this coin and it seemed to match up...or am I just way off here?

If this coin had been struck with a Mercury dime die then it would have a Mercury dime design on it. Not a Wheat cent design.

I think we all see things in our coins from time to time.

From the pictures, all I see is a badly worn, corroded, damaged cent. Often, random damage can be mistaken for all kinds of anomalies, sort of like seeing images in clouds. You can post better, close up pictures of what you are seeing, but don't get your hopes up!

@tnt, being different metals, dimes and cents weigh different amounts and therefore you should be able to prove to yourself that this cent was struck on the correct planchet.

I'm thinking post-strike damage with a high degree of circulation wear.
