I have been CRH for silver coins for about two years -- focusing on searching customer-rolled dimes and half dollars (which unfortunately are challenging to locate at a bank). Yesterday I purchased five rolls of dimes as a local bank. I noticed that three rolls were in old-fashioned wrappers. Each of those rolls contained only Mercury dimes (dating back to 1916) and silver Roosevelt dimes. One of them is a 1921-D Mercury dime in About Good condition -- a low-mintage "key date" for that series. Keep searching -- lightening does strike!

Congrats on your determination paying off.
So how exactly do you approach the bank employees, and what do you ask? Do you call ahead?

I found a road-rashed 2000 P dime on the ground at the gas station yesterday...,. some people have all the luck. If it weren't for bad luck.... you know the rest.
How bout some pics?

I don't call ahead to banks to purchase rolls of circulated dimes or whatever half dollars are available. I just ask the employee if I can exchange my dime rolls for other customer-wrapped rolls. Most of the time they agree -- although a few banks won't do that because I'm not their customer. It is more difficult to finding half dollars that have been cashed in by customers. Last month a different bank had five rolls on hand they recently received from a customer. I found two 40% silver Kennedy coins in that stash. Both of them were oxidized, which might have made it difficult for a casual person to identify them as being worth more than face value. I now call that bank once a week and ask if they have more customer-rolled half dollars.

Interesting. I've only had one teller in our area offer to swap rolls. Many other banks don't even appear to keep coins up front anymore, the tellers need to go to the vault even for small amounts of coins.

Today I visited the same bank where recently I acquired three rolls filled with silver dimes. The young bank associate told me she had 16 Kennedy half dollars recently cashed by customers. Ten of those coins are 40% Kennedy half dollars. I gladly will continue to visit that bank...
