In a thread from a few years ago, merclover posted a pic of a "trumpet-tailed" S. Yours does not look like this published image. http://goccf.com/t/369653
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

As I suspected. The "knob tail" posted on that older thread is actually a 1945-S Mercury dime Inverted Mint Mark FS-504. You won't find that variety on PCGS (yet), but you can check out the images on Variety Vista: Variety Vista 1945-S 10c FS-504

As a side note, you should check for the die crack through the ERI of America. I think I can see it between E and R on your coin, but it's a little more than I can make my eyes see. The FS-511 listing on Variety Vista looks to be a coin in really rough shape. You might consider offering Dr. Wiles a chance to upgrade his images. Yours looks like it also might be a considerably earlier die state.

"Note lack of serifs" https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...s-511/145552You are correct Sir! We have a bingo we have a bingo we have a bingo...take it to a neutral tabel... Thank you all for taking the time to help me out! Here is a photo of the die crack area. This will help me in the future with this variety. I feel like I missed one of these FS-511's a few months ago in high grade - 66/67 fsb - because I was unsure. <kickself>

Quote: I picked up another FS-511 Trumpet Tail. I go over a year and don't see any across all grades, then two pop up just weeks apart. PCGS MS65. Fantastic!
