Hello All, seeking your expertise on this interesting coin, as you can see from the picture, it's missing a numeral which is possibly a 7 and I am wondering is it corrosion that ate the numeral or is it a genuine error coin? I know coin has environmental damage and if affected the date then it should do to the whole date but not just a particular numeral right? Pls share your thoughts on this interesting piece.

The field around where that fourth digit should be looks a bit lumpy. I wonder if someone purposefully removed it. Hard to say though as it could also be grease in the die.

Thanks Spence, if you see closely there seem to be a clear doubling of 7 on it and it makes me think it could be a genuine error from striking and something I should have mentioned before, this a 1867 double die obverse coin...

Please put up a photo of the entire obverse of the coin. A DDO is ver obvious even extremely worn by looking at the arrows, there are several DDO in 1867 as well besides the large one DDO-1, there are also several RPDs in 1867. Also need a photo of the entire reverse, if the D in "united" has a full serif on the top then it's an 1864 or possibly 1865, the D was damaged in is missing the upper serif on all coins after 1865. All that aside a missing digit is not all that uncommon in the Two Cent series, I have several of them, mostly (I believe) caused from either loft over grease on the die filling in the digit or a piece of cloth or wood on the die during the striking. The dies were stored in packed grease to keep them from rusting when not in use, and it's easy to imagine how one wasn't wiped clean at first use. The areas missing would be incuse on the die and filled in easily by grease. Others I have in my own collection show the look of cloth and wood bits around the missing area so it's easy enough to say that there was an obstruction in the way of the missing area on the coin, during the strike.

The 7/7 you think you see is Pareidolia. It's way too big to be a date digit, at least the 7s I think you're seeing.

Thanks guys! This is really an interesting coin... Pls look at the 'T' in TRUST in the obverse and the same seem to have happened with the numeral 7 as well. This is clearly a 1867 DDO coin... I am just curious if the error on the date and T will add any more premium to this rare verity. Added the pictures of the whole coin for you to look at and better judge.

I bought it as DDO paying a good premium for it... Now just wondering if it has a chance at a straight grade or error recognition by NGC... What you guys think?

NGC lists the varities they will attribute. FS-101 is one of them. Of course, the grease-filled die will not receive a designation. https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plu...1873/?page=1Straight grade is questionable, I think it may ED but unsure if Reverse gunk is verdigris or just some gummies.
