So received my "S" proof Eagle in October and went on vacation after I received it. I was checking it today because I just received the Morgan/Peace set and voila my "S" coin is not an "S" coin it is a "W" coin. My COA and invoice both say "S" and I bought this as an enrollment coin. Can I sell this coin at a premium as a US mint error coin? Looks like I will get the shaft on this from the mint because they are sold out of the "S" coin unless I want someone's defective coin that was sent back I'm sure.

Did you check the reverse of the coin for an "S" mint mark?
That "AW" (Designers initials) on the obverse gets mistaken a lot for a W mintmark.

I agree with westernsky. Check the reverse for the S. The "AW" designer initial got me confused on my ASE. I though it was the West Point Mint, until a member pointed it out that it wasn't a W ASE. I thought it was, but it wasn't. I bought a ASE without the mint mark, which means it was minted in Philadelphia.
Errers and Varietys.

That's not what "bait and switch" means.

Please post an image of BOTH sides. The 'S' mint mark will be on the reverse and the Designers Initials are on the obverse (AW) but it looks like a W and a glance.

Yep, I guess so!
Looks like he disappeared and is now "Gone With The Wind!"
Hope I didn't offend him by pointing out the obvious. He's not the first, and won't be the last, to think that the AW designers initials on the obverse are a W mintmark!

Quote:I bought a ASE without the mint mark, which means it was minted in Philadelphia. I went through this with you a month or so ago I think? no mint mark on an ASE does NOT mean it's Philadelphia. Generically, it just means it's bullion. Bullion ASE have been minted in West Point mostly, but secondarily San Francisco and Philadelphia. By far West Point is the most common. But other than graded with an implied mint mark, there is no way to tell. You can't buy a raw bullion ASE and know where it was minted.
