About ten years ago, I purchased my first ever gold bullion bar. After shopping around at various sites, I decided to go with a Pamp Suisse 100 gram gold bar since it seemed to have the lowest premium of the bars that were in my price range. When it arrived, it came with a small plastic box made by Pamp Suisse that was designed to hold ten such bars, perhaps as an encouragement to buy more in the future:
[Which I thought was rather silly, to be honest, since I obviously wasn't going to ever be able to afford ten of those bars, regardless of how nice they were.]
Well, that was then. Since that time, I have periodically purchased additional gold bars, and each time I have made sure to buy 100 gram Pamp Suisse bars specifically so they would fit into that little plastic case. Some years I haven't purchased any, some years I purchased one, and this year I finally decided to buy the final two I needed to fill the box:
I will admit there's a part of me that thinks I should swap these ten individual bars for a single one kilogram bar (because how cool would it be to have a kilogram bar of gold, right?). However, I'm planning on keeping these because (a) they are pretty cool in their own right and (b) if I ever need to sell some gold for cash it will probably be easier to sell off one or two of these smaller bars at a time than having to deal with one large bar.
Quote: It would be interesting to know what you paid for each one.
Well, each 100 gram bar weighs about 3.2 troy ounces, and the amount I paid for each one was determined by the price of gold at the time. The last two that I bought happened when gold had dipped down to about $1860 per ounce and I paid about $12,500 for the 6.4 ounces of gold.
Sadly, the premiums on these little gems are higher now than they were when I first started buying them (probably due to the fact that my original source is no longer in business and I have had to get them elsewhere), but they are still relatively low.
I have receipts for all my past purchases, but they really are all over the place according to the cost of gold at the time.
You might be the only person ever to fill up the plastic holder.
I concur with the opinion to not get a 1 Kg bar. Many LCS are reluctant to buy the large bars because of the difficulty of determining gold content. The 1 ounce flat bars are easy; I'm not sure how easy the 100 gram ones are to test.
Agree with all saying this impressive.........IT IS. Also agree with those suggesting that keeping the individuals is you best move. Congrats to you. Barryg.
