I was able to get this 1891-CC Morgan relatively cheaply ($50.) She's in a rough state, but only my second CC. What are your unvarnished opinions on grade. These are seller's pics and it's in a PCGS holder. Thanks! "Nummi rari mira sunt, si sumptus ferre potes." - Christophorus filius Scotiae

Not sure it's even genuine.

Something looks off about this coin.

It's in a PCGS holder so assuming the holder is genuine then the coin must be. I'll say F-15 based on wear.

The PCGS certification matches - I know that doesn't mean much these days. To be honest, I was wondering about authenticity, too. The coin just looks "off" somehow, but the MM appears to be right and there is a variety that matches the date position. I have return privileges with the auction company if we find out it isn't genuine. On the other hand, if it turns out to be a contemporary counterfeit, I'll hang onto it.

Looks like a counterfeit to me.. has that Chinese "toning" price seems low for a coin that looks xf details (scratch)

I agree with the Chinese counterfeit toning. Highly suspect no matter what the TPG holder labeling says.

Yeah, I too have reservations about this coins authenticity as to me it has that off look about it. I'd check vamworld and post it there and see if they could help with authenticity... Could be a real deal coin as well just looking a tad suspicious

Near slanting date, but it's not a VAM 6. Questionable authenticity. The style of the date numerals is wrong, and the MM is definitely wrong for a VAM 6, being both too skinny and too close to the O in DOLLAR. The broken top "P" in PLURIBUS is also out of the ordinary, as is the broken inner bar and weak upper bar of the E before it. I would avoid this coin, raw or slabbed. It's not a VAM 3/VAM 7, so even if it were real, it would be a pass for me in this grade.

I had a few Morgans, parted with them ~45+ years ago, which had a similar look--wear, some old dings, no luster, and that 'flat gray' tone in the recesses. Those Morgans had been in the family before I was a toddler. I suspect this one is legit.

Does anyone know if you can check silver content while the coin is in the holder? That may be the ultimate test of keep or send back.
I appreciate all your replies and opinions. Worst case scenario, I'm out $50 - but I will send back for a refund if I can prove without doubt that it is a Chinese knockoff. I knew this was a crapshoot, but thought I'd take the plunge.

If you only paid $50 for it that would raise a concern with me.

Even XF details this coin goes for three or four times that much.

Personally, I'd want to examine the coin and holder in-hand before jumping to conclusions. At this point, all you (we) have are seller's photos.

As suggested, I put this on the VamWorld discussion page for perusal by those folks. The more eyes the better. I truly appreciate all your continued comments.
