Good strong strike, clean, and I imagine there is some luster and eye appeal that the photos are not picking up?
If it looks good in hand I would go MS66 for this one, but I tend to grade a hair on the optimistic side. Those couple marks on the chin/forehead and potential lack of luster could hold it back.

Highest I can get to is MS-64. Hits on the cheek, chin and forehead hold the obverse back and while it doesn't look like a severe mark, my eye is automatically drawn to the open field at the 1 and the small one under the chin. Reverse is very pleasing and I'm sure the luster is better than portrayed in these pics which by the way are quite nice!

Very nice example. I'm thinking MS65--a strong 65.

Many small ticks, long scratch below the 1, and not much luster - I'll say MS-63.

I'd also say MS-63 at best. I don't see any wear, but with the many tiny surface hits and lack of strong luster, AU-58 is also possible.

i think the photos are not the best. AU58 or MS63. i'll go with MS63 without being able to see the amount of luster actually remaining

I'm wondering if this was cleaned- looking at circular hairlines on the obverse left field extending onto the collar. I think that's his collar. Otherwise, I go MS-63, but the surfaces are not easy to evaluate with these pictures.

last time I grade a nickel before my AM coffee! Didn't really take a good look at all the details.

It doesn't have a tremendous BU gleam. The coin is toned a golden or light copper hue. But there is some visible luster under the light.

Signs of light circulation, AU-58.

That's where I figured it would be, around 55/58. The hair has been touched, although I wasn't sure if the metal was disturbed or just the patina. It seems to have been stored in plastic flip for a prolonged period of time. I think it was a decent buy for a buck, although maybe not a home run.

Cheek bone, collar, shoulder show it the most.

Is there a good photo setup for capturing luster? The axial box works really well for showing the details of the metal surface, but it yields a rather flat image (essentially by design).

Grade aside, not a coin that would interest me with that horizontal scratch from the numeral 1. Pass.
