I'm considering joining the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association to learn more about collecting Canadian coins, and I'm curious to know if anyone is a member and what their thoughts are about it. I'm especially curious if there are any members from the US. I'm a member of the ANA and particularly enjoy The Numismatist and its many historical articles. Is The CN Journal comparable?

By all means, join, There are many many folks from the USA. By joining, you have access to their huge library with research papers, journals, and books ... all for free to use. You will also meet many other memebers, either face-to-face at conventions/shows or via their website. A very cheap upgrade to your knowledge.

Would it surprise you to learn, that there are ANA members that aren't Americans?

Wonderful, thanks for the input! I do plan on joining.

I was using "members" interchangeably here to refer to CCF members from the US who are also members of the RCNA. They might have a different perspective regarding payment of dues (e.g. international fees associated with their method of payment) and shipment of The CN Journal from one country to another.

Similarly, ANA members have different perspectives and reasons for joining the organization. Some, such as myself, primarily join for The Numismatist. Others join for the community, library, research, educational programming, etc.

I would recommend it! I am a US collector and have been a member for some time. When you join you have a choice of getting the RCNA Journal by mail or digital version. I get the Journal by mail because I'm old fashioned. Membership fees are higher when you get the mailed versions, but I think it's worth the difference.

Some of the CCF members write articles for the Journal. There's been a lot of good articles on Large cents lately which is what I'm mostly interested in.

Is there an area of Canadian collecting you are interested in?

I am an American and only collect Canadian. I have been a Life member of the RCNA for about 20 years. Please join, we'd love to have you aboard.

FYI, there has been at least one US citizen that was President of the RCNA or CNA back then. There have been at least 3 Canadians that served as President of the ANA.

I'm a member of the RCNA, ANA and EAC. I live in the states and am an avid collector of Canadian large cents. I would whole heartedly endorce all three organizations if you are interested in copper/bronze, and certainly ANA and RCNA for sure if copper/bronze is not your thing. As mentioned earlier, both organizations have decent library holdings that you can access if you are a member. It's worth it for me for sure!

Thank you all for your feedback! Sounds like a wonderful organization, which I will happily join.

I collect large and small cents through George V, which I might eventually extend through Elizabeth II. I'm focuwing on date and mint marks, not varieties. I also just started working on a type set of Newfoundland coins and other provincial issues.
