Devices look soft and a bit grainy. Perhaps the weight or measurements were off or perhaps XRF indicated not genuine.

The side should be flat on these right? And I think there's supposed to be 'in god we trust' or similar moto engraved in the side as well. My boss had a few of these and they were counterfeit, looked exactly like yours. But no expert on this, far from it. That was my only experience with Trade dollars.

A pretty decent counterfeit. Type 2 obverse and reverse, which is fine. I'd be suspicious of the raised bumps below the arm, the fused denticles on the obverse in the upper right and near the date, and the uneven reeding. Assuming the weight is correct, this would likely fool a lot of people. It's a good example of why it's never a good idea to buy a raw trade dollar—there are too many good fakes out there.

The first thing that pops out is reeds on the edge are not uniform. Raised bumps in the field under Liberty's arm. Better than average casting but still counterfeit.

https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/11131/NGC wrote an article about this specific counterfeit. There are 3 obverse markers that seem to match exactly the attributes of this coin. Without knowing about these markers as indicative of a known counterfeit, I would have been hard pressed to identify this one as not genuine.

You guys were right on with the issues on the coin and NS confirmed the example is a counterfeit with the 3 tells on the obverse. Look at the reverse rim would the seam that goes around most of the reverse be a casting seam to join both sides together?

I am also aware of NGC's article, but wasn't convinced the marks matched:  I believe their own article may have impacted their decision.

Burfle23, your correct the marks are not a match. Lesson learned on that one that a side by side comparison is a must.

What are the weight and dimensions? Where did you acquire this coin? Have you performed a specific gravity test? The more information you can provide, the better we can help you.

well this coin is a bit underweight - it should weigh 419.76 grains or 27.2g

They should have given a basic general reason why it failed to slab, without giving any of their detection secrets away. I find that somewhat disappointing.
Some of us are offering some detailed reasons why, and that is good, but why can't NGC offer a basic general reason?

The raised bumps in the obverse fields do not look good. The rim photo shows the coin as being too thick but that might be just the angle. Getting the weight correct means some are too thick. There are questionable details on the devices as well.
