Yesterday I learned that the adjacent town has a branch of a bank that I regularly visit at other locations. I called the bank and asked if they had any half dollars. The teller said: "Yes. How many do you want? I have $790 in half dollars." When I asked her about their origin, she replied "They were hand wrapped by a coin collector who cashed them two months ago". I told her I would purchase the entire lot.
Initially I was skeptical the bank had acquired these rolls from a bonafide coin collector. This seemed to be confirmed after I examined 48 rolls (which contained nothing interesting). The so-called "coin collector" probably was one of my rival coin-roll hunters! But I pressed on...
Soon enough I hit pay dirt. I began to open rolls that each contained several silver coins -- including 1964 half dollars. One roll contained seven silver coins! The final count was eleven 1964
Kennedy half dollars, fifteen 1965-1969 half dollars, and one 40% silver bicentennial half dollar (an unusual find):
i.e., almost $185 worth of silver at today's spot price.
Soon I will return to the bank and give that teller her reward in Starbucks gift cards.
