Here is a 54 with crud along the inside of the rim on the obverse and more significantly between rim and letters.

I think that is cause by the Rim Fin being folded over, along with DDD.

I can see evidence of a Rim Fin issue, coupled with Die Deterioration.

I recently posted a similar nickel. Mike Diamond said that basically metal had been scraped from the rim to form a thin apron above and over some letters.
