As you all can tell, I've been looking at some Seated Liberty quarters recently. Came across this one that's slabbed by NGC. Straight graded at AU53. Reverse looks like a car got parked on it. Not my coin, nor is it going to be. How can this coin grade straight? Edited by Blastenpene4 04/19/2024 7:43 pm

Maybe it was 4:59 pm on a Friday when the grader? I'm definitely not an expert, but I agree that the rev scratches are details-worthy.

This one should have been in a "details" graded holder.

Okay, if they chose to straight grade this piece then AU53 shouldn't be considered. A "CC" quarter has cache but this isn't a key date. It should be AU Details. Seems pieces such as this are dropped to XF and straight graded quite often.

Very strange that it didn't get the details grade.

I'll go with the Friday afternoon grading session "pass". It has been that way a long time and still goes on today.
On Monday morning it would get the details grade.

Looks like a brass/wire detail brush was used on the reverse.

just throwing this out there as a possibility
there are a lot of hairlines on the reverse however if you look close at them they are not crossing over the devices. this is impossible to do if someone was swiping the coin attempting to clean it. I'm wondering if someone had a heavy hand polishing the die. the area that stood out to me is the field between the right end of the banner and the upper part of the right wing and the field in that area. this cannot be done without hitting the devices. there are quite a few on the obv but they appear to be from circulation. I'm thinking it might be graded correctly. obviously eye appeal is not the best due to them
anyone want to comment on this one way or the other?

What if they aren't scratches? Could it be some type of grime? I can't see a TPG straight grading it if they were scratches.

I'm thinking like Panzaldi. Most of the reverse lines don't cross devices which suggests they are die polish lines. Several die cracks contribute to the overall "scratched" look. Looks like a few faint scratches do cross the right (facing) wing.
Detail looks more AU-50 than 53. Eye appeal doesn't seem very good. If shopping for this date I'd hold out for a nicer one.

I see lots on lines that cross the devices and lines on the devices that don't go to the field. This one graded Friday @ 5pm for sure
