This is the first time I've seen a newer quarter look this way. This time I can say it isn't my pic that makes the reverse of this quarter fuzzy. It's actually how it looks.

Please post close-in, end-on pics of the rim in couple locations. I'm thinking we may (may....) have an early stage Dryer Coin. Die Deterioration might be in play also. Rim pics will help.

@Spence: There is definitely some orange peel effect. The 2nd R and Y in ferry are nearly unidentifiable.

Thanks for the info EV. Very interesting indeed. I wasn't going to keep it but now I think I will.
This coin I got from a store in change so I wasn't too worried about it.
On a side note: In my younger days when I was a machinist, I wasn't allowed to handle steel. If I grabbed a steel bar, the next day there would be my hand print in rust on it. I ended up working mainly with austenitic stainless (300 series - high nickel content).

If this is the same reverse die as the one responsible for the grossly distorted die deformation error, then it would be the first example of an earlier stage in the deformation of this die. I'd love to see it up close and possibly write it up for my Coin World column.

In the earlier stages of the die deformation error, it might be difficult to distinguish the former from conventional Die Deterioration. I have not yet identified a die marker on the obverse of either of my late-stage specimens. But perhaps details in the peripheral flow lines along the perimeter of the reverse face might serve to link two or more specimens.

I'm glad I checked back in on this post.
I didn't find anything of note on the obverse but I also didn't look at it in great detail. Quite a bit of circulation wear and tear.

If you're interested in having me study and write up this coin, just send me a PM. You would naturally be credited with the find.
