We could always call it a spiked head... Just joking, of course.
Would love to see this one in-hand.

John, sure. I assume that just about any alloy can have laminations. The 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy used for nickels has numerous examples of lamination errors. Lams are much more common (and large!) on Buffalo nickels, but I have standard cupronickel Jefferson five cent coins with laminations in my collection. Lest I inadvertently take too much credit here: the seller had it clearly identified as a lamination mint error with excellent photographs. I was just a collector who paid the asking price because I thought it was a neat coin.

Quote: First time I've seen it on a proof though. Same. Although in my case that's not saying much—you've been playing the coin collecting game much longer than me. Prior to buying, I searched Google for proof nickel lamination examples. I didn't find any, but I have learned that for whatever reason, Google is not particularly proficient at finding individual coin certs on any major grading site. That goes triple for mint errors.

I feel that where this was uncharted territory in silver percentages, they had more problems with the war nicks. The other direction though, with 90% silver did not seem to have as many issues. I know nothing about metallurgy, maybe someone that does can chime in about this.

Pretty cool find! It's the first time I've seen a Lamination on a proof nickel.

I did some research on Heritage Auctions last night. There is one proof cent sold with a lamination error, in the Error category. There were some proof nickels and quarters sold in their respective categories with a tiny lamination noted in the description. They were impossible to see on the low resolution photos of the entire coin.
It's hard to get a feel for whether small laminations are considered minor and irrelevant flaws on proof coins, or whether they just don't happen that often.
