I recently was looking over 1858 Flying Eagles on ebay and found the following coin listed as 1858 SL. I noticed the broken wingtip and then saw the tip of the 7. It was a buy it now posting for $39, I thought it was a good deal. The tip of the 7 above the last 8 is the most defined that I have seen on a coin of this grade. the die chip above the first 8 is worn but recognizable. All the the other attributes are present including the reverse die marker. I really believe that sellers don't know what they have sometimes, but I am glad to add this to my collection of overdates.

As I understand it @idk, the overdate itself isn't always visible, but this variety can be successfully identified via certain other markers, such as an interrupted wing tip.

What about the unwritten rule, find the error/variety first then match markers?

Nice pickup, if it's indeed the real deal.

I can't quite wrap my head around it, but congrats. I guess I'm in the John1 camp on this one.

One of dozens of obscure varieties in the IHC series that don't fetch much of a premium in well-circulated grades.

This is actually considered to be the strong overdate variant. The top right part of the 7 sticks out above the 8. This is not an obscure variety and it commands a significant premium. I believe this is the top variety in the flying eagle series. I don't have my snow book with me, but I'm certain he gives this 5 stars out of 5 for collectibility and premium.
