From time to time, I go through my collection. . . Today I checked out my 2006 AES 20th Anniversary 3 Coin Set. The proof and uncirculated Eagles from West Point look great; the Reverse Proof struck at Philadelphia -- not so much:
2006-P-Reverse-Proof-Eagle---Toning-? 2006-P-Reverse-Proof-Eagle---Toning-?
The coin capsule seems sound. The set is stored in a cool dark place. Is this toning ? Will it increase over the years ? Is this fairly common for ASE's 15+ years old ? Anyone else seeing this in their sets ? I'm aware toning can be desirable to a certain swath of collectors; I'm not one of them. Here's a side-by-side image of the set in the OGP:

Thanks for your feedback.
P.S. I wish USM would package their offerings as nicely as they did this set.

It is toning. Alongside the rim of the capsule- so it is caused by intrusion of air and chemicals in it through the capsule. It may be a defect in the capsule or not complete closing of it. If the set is stored at the place that caused the toning in the first place, it will continue.

with arkadyn here.
If you have any other capsules lying around, you may want to use it and get that RP ASE into it.

American Silver Eagle Collectors Love Toning, Most do, I Love it.

I see Perimeter Toning and As Noted, It will continue IF left where it has been kept. Silver reacts to Storage conditions and Clearly Will be seen, Just a Matter of When, ......
If we all lay out Our Sets We too would see the Transitions, If conditions allow Environment Is Everything....

Just My Opinion...Capt, They Look Great, Thanks for Sharing.....

PS, Nothing like opening up a Set from days gone bye, and Just checking them out.......... !!!!!

Toning. Because the Mint capsules are not air tight. I do like the rim toning though.

Amen! That's the second greatest part of collecting in my opinion, a VERY close second to the feeling when it first crosses your desk (i.e., the thrill of the hunt).

I've had some success in removing this type of toning and it seems to work best on reverse proof ASEs. Or bullion or Uncirculated, not as well on proof ASEs from what I've seen.
Let me know if interested. I've had good luck with it, and then have put them back in the same capsule.

As far as the general comment on them being desirable if toned, that's all in the eye of the beholder.
I've never really liked it in general. But again it's up to the individual.
I do have one proof ASE I bought from one of the larger online dealers, one if the Mints authorized purchasers, actually.
Well this backdated proof ASE I bought from them arrived with the ASE actually popped out of the capsule.
It has just the nicest looking bronze tone to it that I really loved the look right away.
I really don't search out toned coins, but decided I wasn't sending it back, it really is "handsomely toned".
I still wonder if the capsule being popped that was why this ASE toned like that.
