Recently I saw an interesting YouTube video demonstrating why it is risky to buy "junk" silver coins sight unseen. That fellow stacked ten Kennedy half dollars and ten worn Walking Liberty half dollars next to each other. The stack of older silver coins was visibly shorter than the stack of less-circulated silver coins. Anyone who purchased those Walking Liberty half dollars on a per coin basis was getting less silver than if they had purchased the newer coins. This may be intuitive -- but I was impressed to see this effect demonstrated so vividly. Every Standing Liberty quarter that I have collected since the early 1960s has been heavily worn -- and coins with no date typically feel very smooth and no longer have reeded edges. So I repeated this experiment using eight SLB quarters and eight silver Washington quarters. The stack of eight older quarters is the same height as only seven Washington quarters! The photograph clearly shows how much thinner the Standing Liberty quarters are than the newer ones. Although the design of the older quarter variety is attractive, I would avoid purchasing them to "stack" silver. *** Edited by Staff to crop/rotate/resize images. That's why you buy by weight, and that's why dealers don't sell by weight -

Some dealers are cool and let you pick you want if buying in person. There is one local shop that lets me cherry pick and I have had good luck with that at coin shows. One local shop doesn't allow it, and I once got screwed over buying halves. It wasn't until I got home that I realized a couple of 40% halves were mixed with the rest of the 90% halves. Silver was a lot less back then so it wasn't worth the hassle to try to get this corrected, but I absolutely will not buy any 90% from them again.
If buying online, you get what they send you.

My local dealer who passed recently was a great guy and would let me cherry pick, he also bought by weight. A big-name shop 35 miles away is now my closest option. They really left a bad taste when I last visited as they charged me a 10% 'sorting' fee to buy a few dozen Kennedy halves vs Franklins and Walkers, I thought at the time.really sneaky.

My experience is like the previous posts. My local shop lets me cherry pick, but they are not the norm, vast majority will give you the coins no cherry picking. I don't really stack but my stack can be 50% collectible as they are in AU/MS grade.

When I have bought stackers in the past I have focused on 1963 and 1964 halves.

If I'm buying rolls, I try to stick with coins advertised as "full dates". You can still get some worn ones in their, but that tends to eliminate the really bad ones aka "slicks".

If you are selling, a smart buyer will put them on a scale. As a buyer, you should do the same. It is cool though to find something unexpected in a roll.

What are the actual weights of the two stacks? It may not be as great at their heights might indicate.
