Spotted this fine specimen while browsing ebay, intermediate level counterfeit that may fool an inexperienced collector at best. Perhaps a member of one of the "families" of die-struck later date large cents you documented, burfle23?

Pretty bad looking fake. The seller's feedback is worrisome too.

Before it's gone, for posterity could you place the photos here and point out the key characteristics you see in the images that give it away as an obvious fake?

The Chinese have ruined coin collecting forever. I haven't bought a coin off ebay in 15+ years. Nowadays, it wouldn't be worth the risk.

Depends on your perspective. You can proceed with optimism and educate yourself to defend against counterfeits, or sit back in pessimism and avoid the conflict altogether. I purchase only raw coins, spent lots of money, and have only purchased one counterfeit. It was a Half Cent from Canada, and I ended up getting a full refund and kept the coin. Knowledge is power!

@the coin guy, as a newbie I don't worry about fakes too much and have only bought one holdered coin. I attribute and study the coins of interest which solves most issues. I've found so many fakes on ebay that I just stopped bothering to report them.

On the flip side, my father in law accumulated a large collection buying at shops and coin shows in the 70's and 80s and there are multiple fakes as well as coins that were misrepresented including an 1872 Philly quarter represented as an 1872-S, 1875-S 20C sold as Philly and multiple cast fakes including an ugly cast 1878-CC Trade dollar and a cast 1857-S 50C.

So I don't know that times have changed all that much.

As a newer collector of older coins, I could say I would not have picked it out as a fake. Great article as well but now I'll have to revisit the large cents I've picked up already.
