Got this in the mail. Didn't see this on the reverse Notice running through the A and the A Straight line. I call this a Scratch. I am learning and want to know how bad this affects the value of the coin and grade. My guess it is terrible. Is the coin worth keeping or should I return it? I have 46 in the coin. B-Day Present to myself. Let me know your opinions. Thanks all.
Well, I think you should be pleased with the coin every time you look at it. Especially if it is a present to yourself. I think you deserve the best, if you are going to look at it and glare at the scratch, maybe you should get rid of it fast and buy yourself something else. I did not look up the date, it might be a good date, I thought about how you'll feel every time you look at it. I think you know what to do.
The coin look to be MS62 scratched. I would not have bought this coin but, if you like it, keep it. Not trying to sound harsh, it's just my opinion. Other than the scratch, it's overall eye-appeal is nice.
The coin doesn't look too bad, but for only a bit more than $46 you could buy an MS-63 certified Morgan dollar at my local coin shop, without scratches, in a PCGS or NGC holder. The 1885-O is common in all grades up to MS-65.
IMO Wheezydog is right, if the scratch bothers you the coin should go back.
