Dansco seems to be the most popular brand of album for coin sets. However, I've found in recent times a cheaper alternative is Whitman albums. Not the cheap, cardboard folders, but the albums.
That said, which do you guys prefer? I'm not entirely sure. Normally I gravitate towards Whitman because of price... But I also don't like how flimsy some of my albums from them feel.
Dansco, though built way better, is noticeably more expensive, and that's if you can obtain the particular album you are looking for. There have been several times recently where I tried finding a specific album by them that was either no longer made, or ridiculously expensive.
Also, I kind of hate how they make albums with so many empty slots. Whitman doesn't really seem to do this as much.
I think I prefer Whitman honestly.

Most of my albums are Dansco, with a few 'higher end' Whitmans. In my experience, the Danscos are a bit more rugged. In a number of instances I've had the blue 'veneer' pages on Whitmans begin to separate from their cardboard core.

Read my review. http://goccf.com/t/356923While Dansco are sturdier and better, the Whitmans are better laid out. The Whitman quality was pretty poor for a few years as a few of my albums broke apart, but they have gotten better. |

I like both, depends mostly on the layout as mentioned before. For example, for a US Type Set I went with Whitman as they have a 20th-21st century version, whereas Dansco only has a type album starting from 1800 (which makes the set ridiculously expensive). On the other hand, I used Dansco for my ATB set. |

Dansco, For the Win.  My choice was made for me in 1984. I was ready to move on from Whitman folders. I had been considering either the Whitman or Harco albums. My grandfather took me to his buddy's coin shop. The owner told me that Harco was bad (PVC) and Whitman was okay, but for a couple dollars more I could have the "Cadillac" of coin albums. He showed me the Eisenhower dollar and Kennedy half dollar Dansco albums. Since my grandfather was buying, he insisted I get the best. Over the next couple of years I bought the other albums to get my coins out of the folders. These albums had holes for proof coins and those holes sat empty for many years until I realized I had a collection of proof sets taking up space.  Forty years later, here we are.  |

Both are good & have a good amount of both, mostly whitman for my world typeset albums as danscos are impossible to find for reasonable. But I think of my near 30 albums 17 are danscos & 7 are whitmans & the rest are various brands. All of my US coins are housed in danscos & have always liked their quality, so I do prefer dansco. I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better? |

In defense of Whitman, I do think coins look better against a dark blue background than a light tan one.

You may want to check local coin shops. Oftentimes they have specials on albums and/or gently used albums at a good price.

Yeah, I will check around.
I like coins against the blue, but Dansco albums are just so much better put together. If you are constantly moving coins out of place, swapping them out, then Dansco is a much better choice.
The cheap sides that hold the plastic sleeves in place for Whitman albums wear out really quickly.
