I found this coin today at my local coin shop's Grab bin. I noticed the face doubling and decided to purchase the coin since I have nothing like it in my collection. I think it is " Strike Doubling". I can see some doubling in some of the letters in Liberty. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yes, this is Strike Doubling or MD ( Machine Doubling). The shelflike area show this as well as the width/size of the profile itself was diminished as the metal was plowed out of the way, byt the loose die, to make the shelf area. Very cool and extreme example!

A well-known variety but cleaned, unfortunately.

Extreme example, even with the corrosion removal I'd consider it a keeper.

It's in rough shape but still a very cool coin, Jimbo - nice acquisition!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

That's a nice MD example on a nearly 200-year-old coin.

Pretty dramatic MD! It's a late die state of Newcomb-2 if you're interested.

I agree it is a dramatic example of Machine Doubling. That is what caught my eye when I saw the coin at the shop. I don't see many coins with this type of error.

Very dramatic. Excellent pick. Congrats. I'm not familiar with many classic coins but like a nice variety. Quote: A well-known variety... Quote: ... It's a late die state of Newcomb-2... Thanks guys. Now I have a question because I feel the need for a little clarification. If this is a variety and this doubling is consistent on each coin produced, it wouldn't be MD, would it? (Also, if I remember correctly, this would have been produced by manual production as opposed to steam?)

Quote: If this is a variety and this doubling is consistent on each coin produced, it wouldn't be MD, would it? I don't believe the N-2 attribution includes this MD. It's more about peripheral die cracks and repunched letters on the reverse from what I've gathered.

Commonly known in Large Cent circles as a "Chatter Strike"

Quote: I don't believe the N-2 attribution includes this MD. Agree, the MD is not part of the variety designation.
