*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***The toning is throwing me off. Just a ballpark grade would help me as what to do next.

Color looks off, I would say AU details questionable color. Can you post a close-up of the mint mark?

with Pacificoin. I'd like to see a clear large cropped pics of the date with mint mark, the N of United, and the V.D.B. Also the toning looks a bit suspect to me along with what appears to be die chips on the wheat ears. From what I can tell the closest match is MM position #4 but not sure it is a perfect match.

It looks suspicious to me. I'm not sure if it's legitimate or not.

I think questions concerning the date and mint mark outweigh the toning issue--at least for the moment. I see evidence of woody characteristics. In all, a curious piece. Hope we learn more.

Quote: questions concerning the date and mint mark outweigh the toning issue- although blurry when zoomed in on I don't/can't see the dot inside the mint mark. Please supply better photo of the date and mint mark....

to the CCF Our experts are uncertain of authenticity based on the photos provided. You are showing what appears to be a high AU coin which would have a significant numismatic premium - if genuine. If for some reason you are not able to provide the requested additional photos then this needs to go to a top tier TPG.

I've tried to get a pic. Of the mint mark that shows the dot in the upper curve of the "S". I think the V.D.B. pic. Shows well. The reverse appears to have some contamination around the "I" in AMERICA and around the upper inside edge of the wheat ear.

It looks genuine to me, although sharper photos would definitely help. I'd call it AU details, questionable color.

Pictures are too out of focus for me. A better, focused pic of the mint mark and the V.D.B. would be needed. I have several of these in various grades. It is one of the few coins I am confident in authenticating with a clear image of the mint mark and its position, and the details of the initials V.D.B.. Most counterfeits are obvious, but an altered 1909 VDB with added S, or a 1909 S with added V.D.B., can be tricky to discern.

I would like to thank you all for your input. I'm 84 and just made possibly the biggest coin investment and coin for my collection. Always wanted a 1909-S V.D.B. I broke down and am sending the coin to PCGS. At just North of dropping 2K for this coin, I need to know! When I get it back I'll let you know the results. Thanks again people. Appreciated, Bob

Good luck! I'm pretty sure it will come back genuine, but I also suspect the toning is artificial. Perhaps that's why it's not already in a slab. Hope you get a good result!
