Hello, coin friends. I was wondering who likes SBA dollars? Back when I was younger and into the coin hobby (2012-ish) I had a set of SBA's in a 2x2 collection. I always thought they were the coolest designed coin. Only coin I believe I didn't have was the 81 type 2 proof. After that, I was basically on a 10 year hiatus from the coin hobby. I think I'm ready to start up another SBA collection though, as I don't have the one from years ago. I have a few SBA's, but nothing too crazy. I also find the smaller dollar coins in general pretty awesome. I have a few early Sacagawea dollars as well. I wouldn't mind finding some higher grade slabbed SBA's. I know there's a user here who has a collection of them and it's awesome.

This is an easy collection to collect at reasonable prices.

Yes, . I put a set together a few years back in a green Littleton album. All are mid range mint state and purchased for under ten dollars each, excluding the 1981 type 2 which was around $30. That said, I think this is an overlooked and under appreciated series.

I like the SBA dollars. As I don't collect proof coins, I'm just missing the 1981-S to complete my year/mint set.

That said, that is why back when I had a set of them initially, I had all the proofs except for the expensive ones. The set is already so small that adding some proofs definitely can't hurt. This time around, I actually went for a Dansco album that is business strike only, since it has a second blank page that can accommodate whatever coins you choose. I plan on putting the proofs in it.

I have a 15 coin set. No rim or mint mark varieties. Just P/D/S/S-Proof. They are in a 16-hole small dollar Dansco page. I added it to my 7070 instead of the gold page.
The 16th hole has the proof Mint medal that occupied the dollar spot in the 1982 proof set. In case you did not know, the next year (1983) they went back to the five coin lens that was discontinued in 1974 when they added the Ike in 1975.

Nice Gems are tough for the '79-S and '81-S. Both are plagued by marking and the '79-S often has a weak strike.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Yeah, I opted for the Dansco #7180 album. I like the fact that it has all the business strikes on the first page, which consists of 12 coins and then a blank page for another additional 12 coins. So I can add the 6 proof varieties in there, and then also potentially have room for other things if I want. Despite being only a two page album, I feel being laid out like this is a bit more effective compared to having an album that only literally has 9 slots on each page with only two pages long. This gives an additional 6 slots. I might be tempted to even throw some Sacagawea dollars into the mix this way. They basically didn't make any dollar coins after 1981 until 1999, correct? At least not in terms of general circulating coins. I'm sure they might have had some commemorative coins for collectors like the Eisenhower one from I think from like 90 or 91.

I started a PCGS certified set of them not because they are my favorite but because it was a short set. https://goccf.com/t/478712I'm more partial to Ike's because that is what I remember as a kid. It was always special to get a large Ike dollar. I remember when the SBA's came out, they were often confused with a quarter. Which is why I think they were not too popular. I do like the reverse of the coin, probably because it has the eagle and the moon like the Ike's do.

The only dollars minted then were the large size Commemorative issues. They were included in the Prestige Proof sets... https://goccf.com/t/219009#1880051

This is a fun, easily approachable, and inexpensive set to collect, as has been mentioned. Mine is in a Whitman album. I know most people in this forum prefer Dansco albums but I like the blue against the silver.

I am sort of considering the same. Or at least, getting them from slabs and cracking them open. Dunno yet. I think their needs to be an album that you can put slabs in.

Out of the money slabs are a great way to collect moderns. You can get these as cheap as about $3. Many have problems and aren't worth $3 but some are really nice Gems that are either undergraded or aren't worth much in this market. There are extremely tough SBA's that have very low value in the market but out of the money slabs is a good place to find coins someone thought were rare and probably are. One of my only slabbed coins is a 1987-D cent that was the first coin from a new die and is mark free and very well struck. The die was not only brand new but an excellent die and the coin was well centered. I was hoping for a pop top since it's head and shoulders nicer than any I'd ever seen and it came back MS-65 which RETAILS for 36 cents! It's not for sale but I couldn't get more than $3.
