Hello, fellow coin fans. I am considering starting a kind of type set. I know Dansco has their famous "7070" album from what I can tell, their are some expensive coins in there!

I have a spare Dansco 2x2 coin stock book, and I figured that might be a good way to start one. I think I want to aim for coins from the 20th century up to modern coinage.

Varieties, proofs, commemorative coins, I'm not entirely sure yet what way to go.

Any advice?

Thanks, jbuck. Yeah, I used to have one of their albums awhile back.
The thing I don't like is the fact that it only has room for certain coinage. For example, one Eisenhower dollar. I might want to add both a clad and a silver one.
That kind of model is definitely helpful, though. This appears to be the updated one, because the one I had did not have the US women's quarters in it.

I also like the fact with a 2x2 collection, obviously, I can add or not add to it whatever I want. For example, I might be inclined to have a 64 90% silver Kennedy half, a 40% silver Kennedy half and a clad one. I like the options.

I take it seems most type sets are commonly used for circulating coinage, as opposed to commemorative?

The 7070 has room for one commemorative dollar and thee commemorative half dollars, but otherwise, it represents normal circulating coinage.

Here is an example of a 20th century type set in a Whitman folder that I had assembled for in the $300 range. Some better dates and better grades. Just to give you an Idea.

A type set is a GREAT Idea! I started on with a Dansco 7070 album.
If you want to do one in 2x2s you can look up what each 7070 page looks like so you can build one like it.

Lovely set! Thanks for everyone's help.

I like the idea of having at least one of each circulating coinage from the 20th and 21st centuries. I am still on the fence however how I will organize them.

Go with you gut and start with the 2x2s. It is cheap and easy. After the set grows, you might desire something more structured to hold them. Give it time!

I know that many members are not particularly fond of the Whitman folders but it suits my purpose in this instance. The nice thing is that it takes you from current day back to the Barber series. Then if you like you can start building a set of Seated Liberty series perhaps in a capitol holder and after that a capped bust series. The basic 20th century set gives you a good start and an incentive to continue. Happy collecting!

So many of us started with Whitman folders. I probably would have never stayed with collecting if not for them.

Sounds like a great project! Putting together a type set is definitely the most fun I've had working on a set in a long time. For me it's the variety. I like your idea of focusing on the 20th and 21st century in 2x2s. There will be no difficult coins to find, but as always I recommend being patient and selecting wholesome, problem-free examples. Most of all, have fun and keep us updated on your progress!

I think its a great idea and were I a young man I'd do the same. As it is the best I can do is my modern History wall, some MSD's, and bullion and PM to leave behind me.

I wish I'd started this in my 20's.

The Whitman folder set posted above was just a duplicate bonus to the types I collect in 2x2's. I do like the 2x2's and 20 pocket binder pages. These work well for vertical columns Half thru Cent. I started out with odd types (2c, 3c nickel and silver,20c and a Half Cent) on the first vertical column then the 2nd column, the Capped bust types (half thru large cent) then a Seated Liberty type set. After that I built my type sets by decades. Trying to collect the better dates and some key dates that represent each decade. 1900's, 19 teens, 1920's and so on. I often find myself trying to upgrade and thus end up with extra coins to fill other pages. Its a chronic disease!
