Just set up the new camera to take a look at some cents I bought over the last week and didn't get far before having some questions. It appears I still need to set the date, however

I checked VarietyVista RPM/OMM/DDO's and didn't see anything quite like that partial S. I believe I'm seeing doubling elsewhere, but don't see an exact match to the D in GOD or the eye, or if either of those even really show doubling.

There's some intense PIDT for sure.

Any help appreciated!

I had recently read that when you have a date and a mm both showing doubling that it very well might be MD. I think that is what you are seeing here. But I don't know that much so I am sure others will chime in.

That very well could be! I wasn't actually thinking of doubling on the mint mark, more IGWT/Liberty, but I see what you mean now comparing it to the date.

I'm still getting my bearings with doubled die & mint mark errors for sure, hoping to learn more now that I can see better. I found at least one RPM I'll try share tomorrow as well, I'm torn between whether I have a match or not.

Still curious what causes the partial appearance of the S either way, haven't noticed that before. Just a poor punch?

Could be from a little grease in the die when this coin was struck.

Looks like Die Deterioration Doubling with perhaps some MD to me.

I'm thinking Machine Doubling and a Grease Filled Die issue on the mint mark.

I agree on the MD.

The top of the mm could also be abraded partially from the die polishing. If you look above the date, you can see the weak outline of the wheat stalk clash. In properly aligned dies, the tip of the wheat stalk is below the first "T" in TRUST, and the tassels of the wheat stalk run through the third and fourth digits of the date. The mint marks were hand-punched into the dies and are (naturally) shallower than the date, and therefore easier to abrade, especially on worn dies. Your coin shows heavy die polishing through Lincoln's vest and the lower date to the rim, probably to remove the clashed impression of the tassels.
