"Technically" it is an ASE (American Silver Eagle) while the "dollar" denomination could cause some confusion with the previous "Walking Liberty" half dollar.

Because your coin had been circulated and "worn", either by you or by a previous owner.

ASE's usually are not found "worn" and if they are there is usually a story behind them.

If I were you and you did not "worn" that coin down yourself I would put it away "as is" since it is developing a nice toning to it.

If you want to "worn" down your own coin and make your own story I would start with an uncirculated one that way all of the wear and stories are your own.

This is a duplicate thread. Please post only one thread per coin. Thanks!

ASE are bullion and as such, generally there is not much of an additional premium (above the premium usually given to ASE) if they are TPG unless they are graded MS70. There are some exceptions but that is typically the case.

Can anyone tell me what grade it is? It's a lot better than those "worn" ones that jack posted

Lets say a high VF.
(we are not used to grading ASE that have been circulated or turned into pocket pieces)

It's a common bullion coin that had something happen to it, probably used as what's called a pocket piece, as mentioned. The only way these coins really are worth grading is if they might grade MS70. So the actual grade would only be academic. I don't think the are any real grading standards for ASEs in this condition. There would be for the upper grade on how many defects are visible under magnification. I think the lowest I've even heard of is MS66, and this is obviously way way lower than that.
Hope this helps.
PS hey unless you want to submit it to get the record lowest ASE grade ever!

*** Edited by Staff - The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. ***

It has that fake aged look that China likes to use to make coins look more authentic

These are faked by the millions. They are about a dollar on Chinese sites...

There is no point in grading a worn ASE. Circulated ASEs like yours are worth melt value no matter what the grade.

Looking back at the pics, the blueish tint I don't think is toning, I think that's from having been in a PVC flip. I had my Franklin half collection do that to me.
Then I think it was someone's pocket piece, they carry it around, IDK, for good luck? That's the appearance, I've seen them before. (EDIT turned in to a pocket piece after it got the blue crap on it from the flip. Those PVC flips were more common back when this coin was made, not around much any more)
You could take it to a coin shop and ask if they'd mind authenticating it for you.
The grading, to most anyone, isn't worth it. If you had an account with a grader and wanted to get it graded as a gag, "world's worst graded ASE! Pop 1!", but not really worth it, unless you found someone who "got the joke" and thought it was funny as well.

It's magnetic, passes the ping test, and doesn't say "COPY."
