There is better ways I would never do it that way. I have cracked a few cutting at the top of the slab and prying with a flat head screw driver. ( not gold coins) WLH. I can see the possibility of damaging the coins the way this person is doing it.
Unfortunately, so much modern gold and silver is consigned to the refiner's flames, because there is little market other than bullion. Dealers can't take chances on prices dropping in today's volatile market, so they have to dispose of it quickly, and the refiner is the quickest means to do so.
