One of my projects has been to get all my inherited coins out of the old Whitman albums and into Dansco pages and combine them with existing albums. For instance, adding a page to the Mercury dime Dansco to include all the 90 percent silver Roosevelt dimes. I just got out my Buffalo nickel Dansco and added two pages to move my set of Jefferson nickels into it. I had never looked too carefully at this old whitman that I got from my mother and just assumed it was complete. When I looked carefully at the dates, several of the nickels were duplicates that has just been plugged in. To my surprise, I found that I was missing four dates in a set I thought was complete. I had two of the missing dates, a 1938 and a 1943-D in my nickel rolls and I quickly used buy it now on ebay to fill the other two, a 51-S and a 59. If you have inherited any old albums, you might want to double check the accuracy of date/mints.

One of the pleasures I get from collecting is just the sheer joy of going through them now and again. I'm always surprised, sometimes pleasantly, when I've miss-identified a coin. The longer you spend at this hobby the more you pick up and although I certainly don't consider myself an expert in any particular area I still amaze myself regarding what I have picked up, knowledge-wise, over the years. I've just got the latest editions from Krause so lots of rechecking to do.
Oh happy days.

Many years ago when I was putting the final two coins in my Eisenhower dollar album (1973-P and 1973-D from a mint set), I noticed that my 1976-D Variety 1 dollar was missing the mint mark!

How did I go so long without noticing that? I think it was because when I got to those dates on my look-throughs, I spent more time looking at the reverse than the obverse.

I immediately went back to that coin dealer to get the correct coin for the hole. The duplicate is now in one of the four undated holes in the Eisenhower dollar Dansco. I get a good chuckle every time I see it.

Agreed! I went through a couple albums that I had gotten from my grandma. I found at least five coins that were in the wrong places.

Not sure why so many prefer Dansco over Whitman but to each their own. I like Whitman over the others and now have over 100 Whitman Albums. I like the ability to make my own Albums with their blanks and the press on numbers/letters. I then can make an Album of all Dimes of all types, etc.
As to looking at coins carefully when aquiring them from other sources, I find I do that with my own coins frequently. For example there was a recent story about the 1982 Lincoln Cent Double Die. So with many rolls of those I sat down and went through all mine again. Then I read about the open and closed S on the 1981 Proof sets and again, went through all my proof sets. You never know.
