2009 might go down as one of the most memorable years in Numismatics. We were flooded with an array of products from the US Mint. Some of the products were the long awaited Double Eagle High Relief Coin, The Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set, and the special 4 Lincoln Cents in the original copper composition. 2009 also saw the ongoing trial to determine if Joan Langbord or the US Treasury has the right to own 10 1933 double eagles. I don't see this trial ending before the end of the year. For those of us who collect proof and burnished American Eagle coins, we must now accept the fact that we will always have holes in our ASE albums due to the mint's inability to obtain enough silver and gold planchets. Who can forget the record prices that gold is selling for these days. As of today, gold has posted a new record of $1,218 per ounce. I was able to complete my Collection of ancient coins that started with Julius Caesar and ended with Caracalla. This personal milestone took me about 5 years to complete. I managed to get my son a Lincoln Coin and Chronicles set before it sold out. I also started and almost completed a Franklin half album. Right now I only need 2 coins to complete my album, before the end of the year. I recently lost my grandmother to cancer, I mention this loss because she was one of the most influential people in my life. She was also responsible for getting me into Numismatics. I remember getting coins as gifts over the years. I still have all of them. Like most, I am still trying to find 2009 dated Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, and Washington quarters in circulation. To date, I have only found a total of 4 2009 dated coins in circulation. 1 was a Lincoln Cent and the other 3 were Territorial Quarters. One has to wonder what 2010 will bring. On a personal level, 2009 was an interesting year for Numismatics. Will we continue to see record gold prices. Will Silver pass the $20.00 mark? Will the mint produce any ASE for collectors or will we have another hole to add to our collection? These and other unanswered questions, should make 2010 an interesting year. What do you mean we will have a hole in our ASE collections. 2009's were minted and readily available right?

Unfortunately proof and burnished ASE are not being produced for 2009.

The only individual coin I bought this year was a 1931-S for my Lincoln Dansco. I missed more than one opportunity to fill my 1914-D hole for a good price. However, I was one of the lucky 50,000 to get a Lincoln Coin and Chronicles set from the mint.

Bummer year for the circulation junkies... all I've found this year was a territorial quarter and an LP2 cent. Actually strike that. My friend found the cent and gave it for me. I've got like 10 of my friends on the lookout for cool finds, and so far, nothing.

By now I would normally have all circulating coinage except for the last state/territorial quarter. Maybe I'll actually find a 2009 dated Nickel or Dime before 2011.
I also have people on the lookout for 2009 Dimes or Nickels.

2009 has shown me a lot of changes. For one I found this web site. It has provided me with a lot of good information and motivation. Several people this year have brought to me their collection to buy or sell off for them. This allowed me to see what others have spent years putting together and to compare where I was in my collection. I looked at their collection and saw what coins they did not have in their coin albums, even though they had some nice coins there was some disappointment on my part seeing the empty holes. Before this year I looked at my coin albums and saw what coins I had, and did not look at or was not very concerned with my own empty holes. This year I have bought all new Dansco albums (currently six, with more planned). I have filled many of the empty holes. So getting close to some complete sets. I have put away mint and proof sets for my grandson for all the years of his birth. I too was lucky to get two Lincoln coin and chronicle sets. Also I have been selling off a lot of common silver and buying gold.
Hearing and seeing all the nice collection many of you have I am sure I will never be on the level that many of you are at. But just organizing my collection and focusing on making my sets better more complete has made me much more proud of what I have been doing over the many years.
Goals: For next year. Continue with this years progress and somehow figure out how to take pictures in the quality that many of you have, here on this site.

2009 has been a very good year for me. I've been able to purchase a lot of new tokens for my collection including some very rare pieces and some super quality ones as well. (am a little bummed about being shut out o the first session of the Robbie Brown collection, but I did manage to pick up a few after the sale.) I don't think I've added any new cents this year, but I'm feeling like going out and maybe trying to locate one or two 1794's before the end of the year.
New circulation issues have been abysmal. So far one LP1, 1 LP2, a D Washington DC, and last night a P Puerto Rico. Later date nickels are finally starting to show up in my area though I've gone from 16 post 2002 nickels at the beginning of the year to 24 now. That's 8 pieces in one year when I have been averaging 2.
All I have to do now is try and hoard cash and see what I can find in 2010. (Session two of Robbie Brown, I'm waiting for you!)

For me 2009 has been fresh start. After many years away from collecting I'm finally renewing my interest in the hobby. I really didn't buy any coins, but I made the decision to start collecting again. I have also introduced my children to coin collecting and they enjoy taking every penny they find and seeing if it fills a hole :)

This was my first year collecting. Guess I am what you would consider to be a circulation collector. Started in August. I am more of a silver/copper collector but I have come accross some amazing things while searching. So far I have found V's, Buffalo's, War Nickels, Indian Heads, Wheats, Rosies, Walkers, Franklins, and Kenndy's all still in circulation. Earliest date I have found was 1883. I still am amazed that something has survived all the years and ended up in my hand. It has been a ton of fun and I am looking forward to what next year holds. Was able to pick up one of the Lincoln sets from the mint also. Just socking it away for my kids to have one day. I see you guys are still not finding the new LP pennies? I been doing boxes of pennies for copper and am finding them in bunches. Setting them all free so hopefully you will find one in some pocket change. Hope the new year is great for your collection and you have fun doing it.

2009 was the year I really started collecting. For years I saved the odd and unusual coin I came across in change. When the Statehood Quarters arrived on the scene in 1998 I saved those, but really didn't get into much of the collecting until I heard the mint was going to have 4 different Lincoln cents for 2009. When I heard about those I thought I had better pick those up when they were first minted. It's only been this year that I've purchased the folders and albums to store my collection, and purchased older coins to fill them. Discovering this site was the trigger that really got me interested in collecting eagerly. SInce joining in February I've met many wonderful people here that have helped me tremendously in my gathering and knowledge of coins. I've tried to give back to the generous coin community here by offering current coins I've luckily found. The people here have been terrific and I will continue to do this. (psssst..... I should have the LP4's in soon). Altho I've "cheated" a few times this year by buying complete collections of Canadian coins off ebay...... meaning I didn't painstakingly wait for them year after year like many of you have, I still enjoy them as much as if I would have waited for them. There are still a lot of Canadian gaps that need filling so I have that to look forward to. The thrill of the hunt continues. The elusive 2009 Roosevelt D & P dimes and Jefferson D nickels are still waiting for me to find them. It's an enjoyable hobby and I'm glad I took the leap, and a great deal of credit can be given to the members right here. Ken

It wasn't until November that I decided to rekindle my childhood hobby of coin collecting. It started with the repayment of loan with a 1921S Morgan dollar and 2 gold plated SBA's. I've since completed a collection, minus proofs, of the Eisenhower dollar, including a 1973 Proof. I also have the Westward Journey set with the missing ones on the way. So that will be complete, with the exception of Proofs. Also I started the SBA, Sacagawea, and Native American dollars. I have also completed the Lincoln Memorial cent collection, so all I need now is Wheat Backs. I also purchased a Proof set from the mint of the 2009 Lincoln Penny from the mint and am still waiting for it to arrive. In 2010 we will have the new Lincoln One Cent, and the new State Parks Quarters. Perhaps the mint will be looking at the Roosevelt dime and Kennedy half next! It would not surprise me to see a new Kennedy half in 2013. Perhaps we will even see the "Coin Facts" section of THIS website updated to reflect the new coins the mint is putting out!
