When collecting modern issues, one never has a "completed" set. My two truly completed sets are the Eisenhower dollars and Franklin half dollars. It is easy to do when you have a known start and end to the series. I call my Jefferson nickel set complete because I ended that series in 2003 (before the Westward Journey Nickels). I call my Washington quarter set complete because I say that series ended in 1998 (before the Statehood Quarters). My Roosevelt dimes and Kennedy half dollars are "up-to-date" but I cannot really say they are "complete" (even though the primary albums are full and the more recent dates are in a separate album with the 2004+ Jefferson nickels). I will call my Lincoln Cent collection complete when I get the last three coins, only because I defined my version of the collection to end with the Memorial design (Do not worry, my 2009+ Lincolns have a home with the other recent moderns).

Lets see. I agree with jbuck, a modern issue is never complete until the series ends. That being said, I have completed the following series. Roosevelt 46-64 silver Washington 65-98 Clad Lincoln Memorial Cents 59-08 Franklin halves

I've completed Susan B Anthony dollars, Eisenhower dollars, Lincoln Cents from 1941-1974,and a dollar coin year set from 1878 to 1999. I'm terrible at completing sets because my collecting tastes are all over the place. :)

Well let's just say I started 55 years ago and really turned up the heat about 35 years ago. So in some cases age has an advantage but I can tell you it's few and far between.
