PCI thought so, grading it PR-64. I tried crossing it at PCGS a few years ago, specifying a minimum grade of PR-63. They did not cross it and stated it had "questionable color". Naturally, they didn't offer any opinion about whether it is in fact a proof.

I posted this awhile ago but there was no consensus about proof status. Watchoo think now?

The details are completely hammered which is virtually impossible to find on a business strike and the rims(or at least the parts not obscured by slab plastic) look sharp and squared. I am not familiar with matte proof surfaces though, I have never personally examined one and I imagine that pictures do not give the entire appearance of that type of finish. As for the color, I have seen a number of Buffaloes with golden honey toning so I am not sure what PCGS thought was questionable about it

Based on the pics, that is either a matte proof or the sharpest business strike I have ever seen

No expertise here to offer an opinion - but that is a gorgeous Buff.

That is a very nice looking Buff. I am sure you hoping that someone would share some information on how to determine early proofs.

As far as strike goes, yours has what I would think a proof would have. I have wondered if early/matte proofs were double struck like current proof coins are, if so, I think that could be how yours has such great detail.

As far as color, I agree with Biokemist6, I have seen many high grade Buff's that have the golden color.

I wish I was better at taking pics, my 1938 in my type set is golden in color, it came from an original roll. I will post a pic I have of it, but the pic does not show the golden color as much as it really is.

Here is a coin at Heritage and it also seems to have the rim weakness at the right of LIBERTY (maybe it's just the reflection that makes it appear weak)... http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...0&Lot_No=486

Here is what David Lange has to say about the 1915 proof, also look at what he writes about the circulation strike for 1915. Apparently it's tough to tell.

Those rims sure look nice.

The only question is the hit over the eyebrow.

Still, very nice.

unqualified opinion (opinion); I dont think it's a proof. I think it's a business strike in pristine condition. That one nick above the eye keeps it from MS66, even (almost 67). Get it slabbed, proof or not....my opinion only...then you'll know.
