I was on a trip to Charlotte NC area this past week, and had to stop into a coin shop. Picked up this War Nickel set in a capital coin holder. The price was $80.00 I hope the price was not to bad. I have two of the 11 coins in my Dansco, that I paid $15.00 for each. I was guessing at $7.27 each was a fair price, I did not have any price guides with me. This will bring down the empty slots in my Jefferson Dansco to 36. I think with the Pensacola coin show coming this month I should be able to fill many more of those empty holes.

Those look to be in pretty good shape too ! ..... were they cleaned or dipped ? I have over a hundred of these War Nickels and could put together many sets.....BUT >>> Mine are are "crudded up". I don't have any in a nice clean uncirculated condition. Wish I did ! Congrats on these ! ..... I think you got a good deal ! ....

That's a fair price, and a good, clean looking set. In the last few years $80 to $90 seems to be a middling retail price. Can be found for more, and can be found for less. My Jefferson set is complete (has been for several years) with '65 up all Gem BU and Proof, and '64 down all VG+, with the 50D being Gem. Last year I finally pulled the trigger on a Gem BU War set for $90. I'll get around to the others some day. I can only have so many irons in the fire at one time! Back around '91 to '92 a Gem set was retailing about $45-$55. In almost 20 years the price has "only" doubled. Not bad considering the appreciation of so many other items in our society! Steve

Looks like a nice original set to me from what I can see. You did OK. Check for double punched mintmarks, the doubled die 1945 P reverse and the 1943 P 3 over 2 and the 1943 P double eye. Sometimes a 1942 P proof can slip by dealers too as a business strike. Depending on the quality of your nickels is what would be a good deal or not. Can't say from here but you are probably safe anyway.

Thank you all for the input.
From what I see they are all BU coins that have not been cleaned. Three of them are close to full step, but I would say not complete.
I took them into my local dealer just to get his input, he told me he would buy them for $70, before I told him I paid $80.00, so I guess I did OK. He also said he would give me a good price to trade in the two I already have and the holder.

GoldRush58, wheezydog is right. Check 'em before you put them in your Dansco. I found my MS65 1945P DDR inside a set like yours. It was also in a capital holder. https://goccf.com/t/58119Here's the thread. Scott

Scott, After reading your post and your very interesting thread, I had to go and look at the set. I guess I am not as lucky as you. There is no DDR or over date. I did put them in the Dansco this evening, I think the look great. So now only 36 more holes to fill. I am sure I will pick up a lot of those at the show this month. I looked at the price guide tonight and saw the prices for the 39 D and the 42 D ... ouch. I thought I had the hard ones out of the way. I have thought about selling some of my duplicate coins on this forum, but really not sure how the process works .. selling .. or auction .. and how the exchange of money and coins works.

It looks like a very nice set, I think the price you paid was very reasonable. These War Nickels look really nice in an album. They come with such nice luster and stand out compared to other dates made from nickel. As far as selling is concerned, just post the coins you wish to sell on the for sale page, include pictures and a price. It's that simple.

Jbuck The coin shop was in a suburb of Charlotte, A & D coins in Monroe.
He had a lot coins I would be interested in, if I lived in the area and could work out some good prices.

Would you be interested in selling the holder if you took the coins out?

I have taken 9 of the nickels out of the holder and placed them in my Jefferson Dansco. I had the 1944 P and 1945 P already filled. I am not interested in the holder. I was going to take it into my local coin shop with the two nickels and see what I could get for it in trade. But I also have been thinking about seeing how selling on this site works. To me it would be a balance between what coins would sell for on here, with shipping and still give members a good deal or just sell local. I know these holders sell for around $25.00 new (or have been told that) I am sure I would not get anything close to that trading it at my local shop. And not sure what the cost of shipping would be. I also have a Dansco Mercury dime album, with about 20 dimes. I bought it just to upgrade some coins in my album. I was thinking about trying to sell it here too.

If you wanna sell the holder with the two coins I may be interested, let me know if you decide to sell and if you come up with a price and we can go from there. I have made many transactions on this site. Easy as pie!
