Unfortunately, not everybody looks at coins the same way. I remember reading a story about dimes during the Mexican War period, where they were released to pay the soldiers only (not into general circulation) and the soldiers traded them to the Mexican citizens who created silver jewelry from them. I can't find the reference right now, but someone may be able to confirm this one.

You have to look at an item like this in light of the time it was made. The coins were in circulation when Native American silversmiths used them to make jewelry.

Want to really cry, think about what dates they might be.
Say maybe they are all dated 1921 ..... I am sure they are not, but what dates are they.

They are non rare U.S. coins and many just buy them for just bullion and tha't what these seem to be. If they were gold Stellas or gold Mexican Escudos, well then, that's a crime.

As long as someone gets enjoyment from it I can't see a problem. The more coins that leave the pool the more valuable the remaining ones become. Also the harder the hunt becomes which for me is just as much fun as the acquisition.

As an antique collector, I can appreciate this item. My best guess is that it does look a bit high for bidding, probably 500.00 to 750.00 would be more like it. It is what it is. Jewelry. It looks to be from the late 1940's and at the time it was no big deal to do that to coins. This was probably something they sold along the highways ( Like Route 66 ) at trading post near reservations for tourists.

As long as no key or semi-key coins were used, then that necklace as early 20th century Navajo jewelry is worth more than the value of the coins.
