Hey folks... I'm in the market for a 1914-D Lincoln Wheat, so I'm trying to watch some auctions and get smart. I'm thinking this is one of those coins I'll definitely get already certified, but in my search today I stumbled upon this: http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-D-LINCOLN-...S_IndividualIt's a pretty coin, except the mm seems rotated. Am I nuts - is this coin legit? Either way, not buying it, but I'm trying to gain a little experience. Could just be a funny pic?

It's hard to tell off that picture. Since you said you wanted to get one already certified, you're probably already aware that this is a FREQUENTLY altered coin. People add the D mintmark to a 1914 cent from Philly. Beware. I found one in circulation over 40 years ago. Just recently sent it in for certification and held my breath until it came back. It was real and PCGS graded it at VF-35. Best coin I've ever found.

Hard to tell from the pictures. I wouldn't buy if the pictures were like that, not for a key date. I get a kick from comments like this seller made: Quote: I UPGRADED SO I AM SELLING THE EXTRA ONE...GREAT ADDITION TO A COLLECTION... I DO NOT GRADE COINS SO THE PICS WILL SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES... You have a collection where you are upgrading an 1914-D, but yet you can't grade coins, too funny!

I know for a fact that I don't have the knowledge or enough experience to be able to buy an ungraded key-date coin from e-bay.
Looking through the sellers feedback, he/she has sold 1 or 2 others in the past, and I didn't see anything negative. The 7 day return policy gives me a little bit of comfort too...but not enough to actually bid on the coin. As okiepb mentioned...this is a coin that is frequently altered. For what my opinions worth, I wouldn't bid on it. Not without more knowledge...or it first being inside a slab.

that is funny, Duke! Anytime I see shoddy pics on such a "fantastic" coin, I just move on. If that were mine, I would be showing loud and proud pictures, with die markers, the whole 9 yards. okiepb, you found one in circulation! Too cool!

I'm suspicious of this coin. The D does looks tilted almost as if were applied to a 1914 LWC. Be safe and purchase an already certified example from one of the "Big 3" TPG's. The 1914-D is highly counterfeited.

Well, this answers my question - nobody came back with "that's actually obverse die #3" or some such thing. Yep, tough to tell from the pics, yep, I'll be staying away from that one.
Verm - I keep checking back on your site but you don't have anything on my list! And now you've gone and sold the Hibernia! Drat... : ) And congrats!

Quote:Friends don't let friends buy raw key date coins on ebay... Should be enough said. I suspect that the 14D is one of the top faked, counterfeited, made up coins on Earth. Still remember when I was a kid we erased part of a 4 in a 1944D to make 14D's.

I certainly would not say the coin is altered or that you should not bid on it. I will say that I would not. I simply did not like the way the mint mark sat on the coin. Although it is likely genuine, I would want a grader's opinion and slab for this one. Just my own opinion.

A coin like that should at least have the zoom feature at the very least.

$145 and 17 bids so far. How many of you are actually bidding on this? WOLF

I never purchase anything but lots that I expect to be junk without having the coin in my own hand first. I want to tilt it to the light under my loupe and study it closely. Even if slabbed, I want to look at the seal and the coin. But that's me.

Don't buy a raw, key date coin over the internet. Go see the coin in person. (I'm tried of telling people that.)
