Another bullion-plus coin, purchased based on a bad photo. I hoped it was original but in-hand it clearly has been cleaned. Nevertheless, a decent chunk of gold purchased at a modest premium over current spot. I seldom see the 1884 offered. It's not a scarce date but somehow it doesn't appear very often.

This coin may barely make AU-50 for detail; thoughts?

Well, I always look up pieces like this one on CoinFacts. They estimate 800 surviving total for a 99.6% attrition rate. That would certainly explain why you don't see them very often.

Nice color with a couple rim bruises and normal bag marks. Could be AU50 details or EF+. Does not look to be harshly cleaned to me.

Scarce dates costing little more than bullion are hard to pass up. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

These images show how soft gold really is, even at 900 fine.

I also collect ancient coins.

I makes me wonder sometimes, when you see ancient Greek gold staters of Alexander the Great in as struck condition, offered for sale by dealers with a good reputation.

Looks like my 44-D which is ANACS AU50 Details/cleaned.
That's what I'm calling it.
