I was unsure if I should have put this coin in the error queue or not.

Anyhow, I want your opinion on what the grade should be on this coin in light of the fact the words ' Half Cent' are absent.

IMHO it would seem that under normal circumstances the entire reverse would have comparable wear similar to degree of wear that the ' Half Cent' area demonstrates.

Please comment on whether this absence of verbiage constitutes an error and a subsequent increase in value of this coin.

This coin has at least VF detail which makes the absence of Half Cent pretty interesting. I wonder if it might have been deliberately ground off, perhaps to prepare the coin for an inscription. Perhaps the relative lack of corrosion in the reverse center is a result of the surface being very smooth after machining? If the coin was altered it was done many years ago and the corrosion came later.

The other obvious possibility is that there was a filled die. The severe corrosion will make it tough to properly diagnose this coin.

VF Details is probably a stretch given that the reverse is missing a big chunk of its design. Not exactly sure what happened to it ... !

I would say VG-8 / corroded with possible damage to the Reverse (or some incredibly uneven wear!)

I wanted to throw this example out there again after a decade to see if any different opinions surface. I'm including a new hi res shot of the sanded area.

What do you think PCGS would classify this as if attributed?
