Just went through $700 of halves, and after separating the 1974-Ds, I found this! There was about $55 worth of 74-D's and with the help of my new 10x Hastings triplet, I am fairly sure that this is the elusive doubled die. The pictures aren't as good as I would have liked, but I hope you can verify whether it is a DDO or just MDD: Tell me what you think!

Sure looks like it from way over here! Does the doubling look like this?

Yep that's what it looks like. Mine is quite a bit more worn though (maybe EF) but you can see the strong doubling on "RUST". I'm glad my new triplet arrived just in time for this coin! I'll get better pics on as soon as I can so the doubling is clearer.

Even with the pictures you posted, you can see the clear notching on the "U". Nice find! Those are fun!

The fortunate thing is that this is a really nice doubled die. The unfortunate thing is that this die lasted a full die-life and is considered pretty common. It's premium value is rather minimal.

Where does 2010 Red Book have this coin? My older ones have it at $150 in MS63 I think, but somewhere around 2008, it plunged to $10 or so. Someone verify this for me? What is a full die life, 100,000 coins?

Nobody knows exactly how many were minted, but around 100,000 would be my best guess. Problem with them is that since they don't circulate, most still remain either in collections or in rolls waiting to be discovered...unlike cent doubled dies where many of them are circulated to death.

Now if we could just get them out of the vaults and into the hands of all of us roll-searchers. I have found 3 so far, but none of them are very high grade and all have nicks & scratches.

I'm going to make sure to keep checking those 74-Ds. Never know if it's a doubled die unless you look!

Regardless of condition (from AU up) they sell for at least $10 a pop...and if you're finding them in bags at 50c each, well, simple math as to profit potential. It's just unfortunate that they aren't really $100+ items. There actually seems to be very limited interest in half dollar doubled dies which would hold down the value of ANY Kennedy DDO or DDR. This is tough enough for me to bear, because I actually have a 1969S Tripled die obverse, doubled die reverse in a PCGS PR69 DCAM holder. If Kennedy half die varieties were NEAR as popular as Lincoln Cent die varieties this would easily be a $500 coin. As it stands I would be lucky to grab a $100 bill for it.

Just got my microscope in the mail and thought I'd try getting a pic of this first. The lighting on the coin isn't great, but I think it's quite a bit clearer than the earlier pic.

I bought one out of a flea market vendor's case, it was sealed in a mint set for $7.00 for the set.
