i am sure this has been addressed before and I pologize if it has but I did look before posting. As a fairly new person to roll hunting, I would like peoples' opinion on the best coins to try to find. Time is not an issue but actually finding and best return back. I have been told Silver halves but 90% silver ones are increasingly harder to find. THen I was told War Nickels and then copper cents. That is why I'm asking for those with years of experience of what a new person should actually focus on. I appreciate any insight

If I were you I'd search for certain coins that are on the difficult side to find anywhere. For example see if you can find a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel in those rolls. Or a 1894S Liberty Head Dime. Keep any Large Cents you find in cent rolls too. The main thing is if your roll searching Gold $20 Eagles, see if there are any 1933 one in those rolls. All others are to be put in the Salvation Army baskets.

I bought two boxes of Kennedy halves from my bank and scored 49 silver coins (19 were 90%ers). I was very lucky as my third box had 0. Welcome!

Nice score Vermontensium. My boxes have been stinking it up lately but I am getting one tonight. I think the OP was looking for 1 coin in particular that is great to hunt for. I am too new to add anything useful. Buffalo nickels are a good thing to look for.

thanks for the advice so far.
I should clarify for additional help.
Should I hunt for Silver Halves, dimes, nickels or copper cents?
Which would I have a better chance of finding based on time and return?
i know it's a crapshoot and alot of times luck but I hear from so many different people on what the best type is to hunt for.
thanks for any help

I am not sure what you are asking... are you asking what roll hunting will make you the most money? Find you the coolest coin? Easiest to sell?

Here is my personal interest ..... I roll search nickels with a goal of completing the 1938-2010 Jefferson circulation strike set. It makes me happy ...... I enjoy the hunt ... I enjoy sharing my finds here ... but the entire collection when completed will be worth ..... uhhhhh .... maybe $30. Soooo .... what is your motivation? Are you looking for profit? Personal interest? A series to complete? Tell us some more of 'why' you want to search and we can offer better opinions. David

If you can get Kennedy halves and have a place the rolls when done, that would be my first pick. I also have renewed my interest in Lincoln Cent hunting. Holding all copper and most 80's dates.

Just my opinion, but I think you find far more interesting stuff searching cents than any other denomination.
Tons of good stuff is still out there no matter which one you choose though.

I would search rolls of coins that are of a series that interest me. I would make a set, and improve the set along the way. I would learn what varieties and better dates were in the series. I chose Jefferson nickels because there is quite a lot of satisfaction in all those areas to be had. The actual series has ended in the design that started in 1938 and ended in 2003 but they all the dates and mint marks are out there to be had at face value.

nickels are the easiest to find interesting things in, always a good assortment of older coins, silver, and foriegn coins along with the odd proof or buffalo/v-nick. Anything can pop up in a box of nickels. In the 5 years I've been searching nickel boxes I've found a 1950 proof and a 1883 with cents, but still am missing 5 jeffersons lol.

if your asking about which to search in regards to the best return based on time, searching and quantity; they are all by chance.
in a lot of our experience, you could get lucky with a solid roll of halves or dimes from the teller, or you could get skunked on 10 boxes. most people around here will tell you that if you can find halves that are customer wrapped rolls, those tend to yield more than a bank ordered box. with dimes, it seems that boxes and rolls get you about 1-5 per$250. I suggest buying a few boxes /week or whatever you can afford and see what works. there is an awful lot of beginners luck on this site, let me tell you...

I am in the opposite camp, I have found more silver halves from bank boxes than customer rolls. But regardless the key to any roll search is volume. Only through regularlly going through massive amounts of coins will you find the rare and valuable ones. Patience is truely the key to roll searching.

Halves are your best bet for silver....they just don't circulate like quarters, dimes and nickels. Good luck.
