One of my New Year's resolutions was to not short out by keyboard by drooling trying to understand what you guys are talking about. Where do I start? Is there something you recommend I read? Thanks for your help.

The Morgan and Peace Encyclopedia id a great start. Dry reading but gives you a lot of information. I am to understand it is normal to go into Information Over-Load at first.

Personally, I would recommend to read what you've obviously already been reading.... the only extra thing that I suggest is that you jump in and ask questions.... there are several folks here who have been doing this for several years, and even more of us who have not.... either way, you will be in good company, your questions will be answered, and it can be loads of fun.... it gets extremely silly at times, and you might have to ask "are you serious?".... There are folks here who can tell you what sorts of things they look for on coins, although you may already have your own preferences.... I don't even collect coins myself.... I don't own a VAM, but I like the fun that this forum provides..... I would recommend getting acquainted with this forum before you go out and spend money on coins or books, but twohawks is the collector, not me, so his recommendation probably holds more merit.... join in here anyway... (it is free).....

Encyclopedia of Morgan And Peace dollars by Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis 4th edition. It is referred to by many as the big VAM book. It contains a tremendous amount of data. In addition, you will need to purchase yearly supplements to stay current. Welcome to this forum and to the interesting world of vams.

tumbleweedtrumpet,
Why don't you tell us what you want to get out of the "Vamming" experience and we could better focus your study.

tumbleweedtrumpet,
I will agree the 'big book' is an excellent information guide not only for the VAMS them selves, but it goes into the entire process of the who, whats, where, when, and hows of all from the people involved, the coining process, the mints and the procedures and problems of those days and actually gives a guide to how to grade, and MOST of a;; starts to show you how to begin the addicting hobby of the adventurous world of VAMMING, Welcome to the family and good luck, ask questions, I will also say that most of the above members who have posted are IMO, some VERY knowledgeable Vammers and more importantly, they ALL are willing to assist you and others in any way they can, my self included, Mike....

If your just starting out, go over to the VAMworld homepage, scroll down on left side till you reach "Attribution 101" and click on it. Read, study, or copy. This is a crash course that will get you started until you get the Big Book.

Let's talk about getting started. Vams you might find interesting are: Top 100 coins, 1878-P 8 tail feather, 1878-P 7/8 tail feather. 1879-S reverse of 1878. These are just a small sampling.
